Graphene oxide for photonics, electronics and optoelectronics

Jiayang Wu et al.

Summary: Graphene oxide (GO) was initially developed as a graphene mimic, but has since been recognized as a functional material with its own unique properties. Research on GO in the past decade has greatly advanced material synthesis and property tailoring, leading to rapid progress in GO-based photonics, electronics, and optoelectronics. This review provides an overview of the optical, electrical, and optoelectronic properties of GO and reduced GO, as well as their applications in key technologies such as solar energy harvesting, energy storage, medical diagnosis, image display, and optical communications. The challenges and exciting opportunities for future technological advances in this field are also discussed.

Subnanometric Stacking of Two-Dimensional Nanomaterials: Insights from the Nanotexture Evolution of Dense Reduced Graphene Oxide Membranes

Yang Cao et al.

Summary: Assembling two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials into laminar membranes with a subnanometer (subnm) interlayer spacing provides a material platform for studying nanoconfinement effects and exploring technological applications related to the transport of electrons, ions, and molecules. This study reveals that dense reduced graphene oxide membranes exhibit a hybrid nanostructure of subnm channels and graphitized clusters, which can be engineered by controlling stacking kinetics and reduction temperature. The optimized nanotextures enable high-performance compact capacitive energy storage.

Defects boost graphitization for highly conductive graphene films

Qing Zhang et al.

Summary: High-temperature defects induced by nitrogen doping accelerate grain growth and ordering of graphene films during graphitization, resulting in highly conductive films similar to highly oriented pyrolytic graphite. This not only paves the way for the technological application of highly conductive graphene films, but also provides a general strategy to improve the synthesis and properties of other carbon materials.
