Computation of eigenvalues of a real, symmetric 3 x 3 matrix with particular reference to the pernicious case of two nearly equal eigenvalues

Isaac Harari et al.

Summary: Standard methods for finding eigenvalues of symmetric matrices can lose accuracy when the eigenvalues are close together. This is because the determinant becomes zero when two eigenvalues merge. However, by using the Cayley-Hamilton theorem to define non-negative invariant factors instead of the determinant, numerical stability can be achieved. Additionally, expressing the angular coordinate in terms of the tangent function and considering the half angle can further improve the stability and efficiency of the computation.

Learning to differentiate

Oskar Alund et al.

Summary: This paper utilizes artificial neural networks to design linear and non-linear discrete differential operators, demonstrating their use in constructing stable discretizations of initial boundary-value problems. A comparison with traditional linear algebra methods is made, and an application to overlapping grids is explored, opening the door for constructing stable differential operators on general meshes.

Intersection-free Rigid Body Dynamics

Zachary Ferguson et al.

Summary: We have introduced the first implicit time-stepping algorithm for rigid body dynamics, with contact and friction, that ensures intersection-free configurations at every time step. Our algorithm explicitly models the curved trajectories traced by rigid bodies in collision detection and response.
