Deciphering the impact of anthropogenic coastal infrastructure on shoreline dynamicity along Gopalpur coast of Odisha (India): An integrated assessment with geospatial and field-based approaches

Manoranjan Mishra et al.

Summary: Odisha's coastline is home to various industries such as oil and gas, ports, power plants, fishing, tourism, and mining, which have negative effects on the coastal ecology and shoreline morphodynamics. A study was conducted to analyze how recent development activities, particularly the construction of ports and related infrastructure, impact the shoreline morphodynamics in the Gopalpur coast. The results showed erosion in most of the studied zones except for one zone, indicating the need for effective coastal zone management to prevent further deterioration.

Impact assessment of severe cyclonic storm Asani on the nesting grounds of Olive Ridley turtle, Rushikulya Estuary and spit in Odisha state, India

Manoranjan Mishra et al.

Summary: The objective of this study is to understand the impact of cyclone Asani on the coastal dynamics and nesting grounds of Olive Ridley sea turtles in the Rushikulya Estuary and spit in Odisha. The novelty of this study is the need to understand the effects of natural disasters on the marine environment and wildlife. This study provides new and valuable data on the effects of specific cyclones on sea turtle populations and highlights the need for increased attention and protection of these important habitats.

Assessing the effectiveness of existing early warning systems and emergency preparedness towards reducing cyclone-induced losses in the Sundarban Biosphere Region, India

Mehebub Sahana et al.

Summary: The Sundarban Biosphere Reserve in India is highly vulnerable to cyclones and tidal surges due to its geographical location and low-lying coastal morphology. However, it lacks a systematic and effective disaster warning/management plan. This study examines the efficiency of existing early warning systems and emergency preparedness in the reserve. The results show a lack of early warning awareness and delays in emergency preparedness, making coastal communities more vulnerable.

A cloud-integrated GIS for forest cover loss and land use change monitoring using statistical methods and geospatial technology over northern Algeria

Bilel Zerouali et al.

Summary: This paper assesses trends in forest cover loss and land use changes in northern Algeria between 2000 and 2020 using datasets extracted from Google Earth Engine. The results showed a significant decrease in forest area and an increase in barren land, with the Constantinois-Seybousse-Mellegue hydrographic basin being the most affected by deforestation. Nonparametric tests indicated increasing trends of forest cover loss in seven river basins. The study emphasizes the alarming situation of forest loss in Algeria and the need for urgent measures to protect forests and the ecological system.

The characteristics and preservation potential of Hurricane Irma's overwash deposit in southern Florida, USA

Kristen M. Joyse et al.

Summary: This study analyzed overwash deposits from four mangrove islands in southern Florida before and after Hurricane Irma's landfall, and found that stratigraphy, grain size, losson-ignition, and foraminifera analyses can differentiate the overwash deposit from underlying mangrove peats. The overwash deposit was coarser, had lower organic content, and higher carbonate content compared to the peats. Continued monitoring of overwash deposits is important for paleostorm studies.

Assessing coastal vulnerability and land use to sea level rise in Jeddah province, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

Abdulrazak H. Almaliki et al.

Summary: Sea level rise is causing serious problems in coastal areas, including flooding, erosion, contamination, habitat loss, and damage to infrastructure. This study examines the potential impacts of sea level rise in the coastal zones of Jeddah Province, Saudi Arabia, under different scenarios. The results show that a significant portion of the study area's coast could be inundated, with potential negative effects on built-up and road infrastructure.

Vulnerability and Risk Assessment to Climate Change in Sagar Island, India

Aparna Bera et al.

Summary: Inhabitants of low-lying islands face increased threats due to climate change as a result of their higher exposure and lesser adaptive capacity. This study assessed the vulnerability and risk of Sagar Island, India, using a geostatistical and geoinformatics-based approach. The results showed that a significant portion of the island and population are at high risk, indicating the need for comprehensive adaptation strategies.

Shoreline changes and its impact on the mangrove ecosystems of some islands of Indian Sundarbans, North-East coast of India

Sandeep Thakur et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of shoreline oscillations on mangrove forests surrounding three estuarine Islands in the Sundarban delta. Analysis of multi-temporal Landsat images spanning 42 years reveals a dynamic shoreline resulting in erosion of mangrove forests. The study suggests that mangrove forests are under severe stress due to shoreline erosion and sea level rise, rather than climatic alterations.

Geo-ecological impact assessment of severe cyclonic storm Amphan on Sundarban mangrove forest using geospatial technology

Manoranjan Mishra et al.

Summary: The study reports the damage caused by the category five tropical cyclonic storm Amphan to the Sundarban mangrove ecosystem in India and Bangladesh, specifically focusing on vegetation impact and shoreline erosion. The results show significant degradation and fragmentation of mangrove vegetation, with dense tree cover decreasing and less dense cover increasing. Erosion along the shoreline was pronounced, leading to inundation of agricultural lands and aquaculture ponds.

Climate vulnerability and economic determinants: Linkages and risk reduction in Sagar Island, India; A geospatial approach

Aparna Bera et al.

Summary: Climate vulnerability refers to the tendency to be adversely affected by climatic variability and natural hazards. Low-lying islands like Sagar Island face increasing physical and non-physical stresses, leading to land, property, and livelihood loss that results in displacements and induced migration. This study explores the association between socio-economic vulnerabilities and indicators such as land loss, productivity loss, loss of livelihood, and induced migration through regression modeling.
