Challenges for Hybrid Water Electrolysis to Replace the Oxygen Evolution Reaction on an Industrial Scale

Till Kahlstorf et al.

Summary: To enable a future society based on renewable energy, the transformation of electricity into chemical fuels is crucial. Water splitting in an electrolyzer is a method to achieve this transformation, but challenges remain for the industrial-scale application of this process. This perspective critically discusses these challenges, including the higher kinetic overpotentials of organic oxidation reactions, limited availability of organic feedstocks, additional purification costs, and electrocatalytic challenges. It aims to help the academic research community identify industrially relevant research questions regarding hybrid water electrolysis.

Electrocatalysis Goes Nuts

Andrew R. Akbashev

Summary: Researchers often overlook the complexity and usability of nanoelectrocatalysts with outstanding performance, leading to a lack of meaningful interpretation and scientific insight in previous studies. This article suggests that experiments should be designed to minimize the complexity of electrode materials in order to obtain interpretable electrochemical responses. Greater recognition of the challenges in this field will help improve the quality of research in electrocatalysis.

Enhancing the connection between computation and experiments in electrocatalysis

Joaquin Resasco et al.

Summary: Combining computational and experimental methods is a powerful approach for understanding and designing improved materials. However, establishing strong relationships between calculated parameters and experimental measurements can be challenging, especially in the field of electrocatalysis. This Perspective highlights opportunities to enhance the connection between computation and experiment, such as measuring the intrinsic kinetic behavior of catalysts and forming clear relationships between calculated reaction energetics and observed rates.

Oxygen Evolution Reaction Electrocatalysis on Cobalt(oxy)hydroxide: Role of Fe Impurities

Kalishankar Bhattacharyya et al.

Summary: In this study, electronic structure simulations were conducted to investigate the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) mechanism and the influence of Fe substitution in cobalt(oxy)hydroxide. The results suggest that Fe(III) oxidation to Fe(IV) enhances the electrophilic character of the reaction center, reducing the proton affinity of surface-bound hydroxyl moieties. Co(IV) in the cobalt(oxy)hydroxide system promotes the efficient formation of an active O radical intermediate. The explicit inclusion of the electrochemical potential and pH improves the models for reproducing experimental findings.

Summary: This article reports a new method of growing hierarchical nanostructures on nickel foam, and successfully doped iron element for oxidation reactions and oxygen evolution reaction. The results show that iron doping is more suitable for oxidation reactions, which can generate higher current density and Faradaic efficiency. In the oxygen evolution reaction, the iron-doped nickel foam electrode can achieve the current density required by industry and maintain stable performance. This article reveals the effects of iron doping and its impact on the reaction mechanism.

Why shouldn't double-layer capacitance (Cdl) be always trusted to justify Faradaic electrocatalytic activity differences?

Sengeni Anantharaj et al.

Summary: The electrocatalytic water splitting activity trend is mainly justified by using two activity markers: double-layer capacitance (Cdl) and charge transfer resistance (Rct). However, in some cases, there is a disagreement between non-Faradaic Cdl and Faradaic catalytic activity trend, raising questions about the credibility of using non-Faradaic Cdl to justify purely Faradaic electrocatalytic activity trends.

Is There Anything Better than Pt for HER?

Johannes Novak Hansen et al.

Summary: Efforts to find cheap alternatives to platinum for the hydrogen evolution reaction have not yet found a catalyst with intrinsic activity that can compete with platinum. It is important to measure intrinsic catalytic activities and consider the impact of mass-transport limitations on observed activity. Despite achieving the highest turnover frequency for platinum, the true intrinsic HER activity for platinum in acid remains unknown due to mass transport limitations.

Summary: Defect and interface engineering are effective strategies to improve the activity of metal sulfides, but the practical application is limited by low conductivity and volume fluctuation. By anchoring Zn-defective ZnS nanoparticles on the surface of NiCo2S4 nanosheets, the NiCo2S4/ZnS hybrids exhibit outstanding oxygen evolution performance with an ultra-low overpotential of 140 mV. The anchored ZnS nanoparticles inhibit volume expansion of NiCo2S4 nanosheets during cycling.
