Improving the accuracy of multimodel short-to-medium-range precipitation and streamflow forecasts over the Upper Bhima river basin, India

Saswata Nandi et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the utility of the TIGGE multimodel ensemble meteorological forecasts over the Upper Bhima River basin and highlights the efficacy of the BMA approach in flood forecasting. Results show that precipitation and streamflow forecasts deteriorate with increasing lead time but can be improved with suitable techniques such as bias-correction and BMA-based post-processing. It is recommended to use an integrated system of improved precipitation prediction, calibrated VIC-RAPID model, and post-processing of streamflows for reliable flood warning system.

Analysis of heat wave over different physiographical regions in India

Rani Devi et al.

Summary: This study examines the characteristics of heat waves in India, focusing on the hilly, coastal, and plains regions. Using observed data from the Indian Meteorological Department, the study quantifies the heat wave characteristics based on the physiography of the regions. The results show that heat waves have been occurring in the hilly regions since 1972, with the northern region experiencing the most severe heat waves. Future projections indicate a significant increase in heat wave days, duration, and intensity, especially in the hilly region.

Spatiotemporal assessment of precipitation variability, seasonality, and extreme characteristics over a Himalayan catchment

Sabyasachi Swain et al.

Summary: This study presents a detailed spatiotemporal analysis of rainfall patterns in Tehri catchment in the lower Himalayan region of India. The research reveals a decreasing trend in rainfall volume but an increasing trend in intensity and concentration from 1959 to 2017. Such findings are crucial for understanding the precipitation trends in a Himalayan catchment.

Assessing the role of SuDS in resilience enhancement of urban drainage system: A case study of Gurugram City, India

Guru Chythanya Guptha et al.

Summary: The increasing frequency of urban floods worldwide due to rapid urbanization, frequent climatic extremes, or poor drainage conditions necessitates evaluating the performance of the urban drainage systems (UDS) and enhancing their resilience. In this study, a comprehensive assessment of the UDS of Gurugram City, India, through the concepts of sustainable drainage systems (SuDS) is presented. The study finds that climate change poses a more severe threat to UDS than urbanization, and the combination of both can worsen the repercussions. The role of SuDS in enhancing the resilience of UDS by mitigating flood magnitudes, delaying peak flow, and storing additional water volume within the catchment is demonstrated.

An assessment of statistical interpolation methods suited for gridded rainfall datasets

Yuexiao Liu et al.

Summary: This study examined rainfall interpolation methods in the Emilia-Romagna region of Italy and found that different interpolation methods perform differently at different time scales. Ordinary Kriging generally outperformed the other four methods in terms of accuracy, while Thin Plate Spline method showed better performance at the monthly scale. Winter and spring results were better compared to summer and autumn.

Appraisal of historical trends in maximum and minimum temperature using multiple non-parametric techniques over the agriculture-dominated Narmada Basin, India

Sabyasachi Swain et al.

Summary: This study analyzes the long-term trends in maximum temperature (T-MAX) and minimum temperature (T-MIN) over the Narmada river basin in India using observation data from the India Meteorological Department. The results show significant spatiotemporal variation in the temperature trends, with both T-MAX and T-MIN generally increasing. The hottest months have become hotter and the coldest month has become colder, indicating a higher probability of temperature extremes. The study also discusses the implications of these temperature trends on agriculture in the predominantly agricultural basin.

Ensemble modeling approach to predict the past and future climate suitability for two mangrove species along the coastal wetlands of peninsular India

Pujarini Samal et al.

Summary: Mangroves are declining rapidly due to climate change and human activities. In this study, the potential impact of climate change on two dominant mangrove species in India was predicted using an ensemble species distribution modeling approach. The results showed that the habitat for these species is expected to decrease in the future, indicating their vulnerability to climate change.

Recent decline in streamflow and sediment discharge in the Godavari basin, India (1965-2015)

Sumit Das et al.

Summary: The Godavari River, representing the largest catchment in Peninsular India, has experienced a significant decline in streamflow and sediment discharge since 1965, with a sharp fall after 1990. The decline in sediment discharge after 1990 is mainly attributed to high sediment entrapment caused by extensive dam constructions, potentially leading to significant coastal erosion in the near future.

Modeling and Assessment of Land Degradation Vulnerability in Semi-arid Ecosystem of Southern India Using Temporal Satellite Data, AHP and GIS

P. Sandeep et al.

Summary: This study aimed to model and assess land degradation vulnerability in the semi-arid ecosystem of Rayalaseema region of southern India by analyzing NDVI, LST, rainfall, terrain characteristics, and pedological parameters using AHP and GIS. The results showed that inadequate rainfall, high temperature, problematic soils, and lack of conservation measures were the main factors contributing to land degradation in the study area. The study demonstrated the potential of AHP- and GIS-based modeling in assessing land degradation vulnerability using time-series MODIS NDVI and TRMM rainfall products, terrain characteristics, and pedological parameters.
