Comparison of heavy metals in urban soil and dust in cities of China: characteristics and health risks

Y. He et al.

Summary: By collecting heavy metal data from soil and dust samples in 34 cities in China, this study found that the concentrations of Cd, Pb, Cu, and Zn in urban street dust were generally higher than those in urban soil. The main reasons for the high metal concentrations in some cities were the development of metal processing and smelting industries, manufacturing, and the relocation of heavily polluting enterprises. The heavy metal concentrations in urban soil were not correlated with those in urban dust, indicating different long-term and short-term sources of pollution. In most cities, the non-carcinogenic risk of heavy metals in urban soil and dust for children was at a safe level, with lead being the major contributor to total health risk.

Migration characteristics and ecological risk assessment of heavy metals in ash from sewage sludge co-combustion in coal-fired power plants

Shilin Yu et al.

Summary: Co-combustion of municipal sewage sludge (MSS) with coal in power plants is a common method for disposal, but it increases the ecological risk due to the high heavy metals content. This study analyzed the properties of fly ash and bottom ash from MSS co-combustion, including ash composition, particle size distribution, heavy metals content, and leaching characteristics. The results showed that the co-combustion had no significant effect on ash composition and heavy metals content order. However, the total content of Cu, Mn, Pb, Zn, and Hg in co-combustion ash was higher than that in coal-fired ash without sludge blending. The leaching concentrations of Cr and Ni exceeded the limit value, indicating a potential ecological risk. The potential ecological risk levels of fly ash and bottom ash were moderate and high, with Cr and Hg as the main contributors.

Pollution characteristics and risk assessment of potentially toxic elements of fine street dust during COVID-19 lockdown in Bangladesh

Mominul Haque Rabin et al.

Summary: Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Bangladesh government implemented partial and complete lockdown measures to control the spread, which led to environmental restoration. This study analyzed street dust samples collected during these lockdown periods in different urban land use categories in Dhaka city. The results showed higher concentrations of toxic elements in the dust during the partial lockdown compared to the complete lockdown. These elements mainly originated from anthropogenic sources such as industrial and vehicular emissions. The findings highlight the importance of conducting comprehensive assessments of toxic elements in street dust to ensure public health safety and ecological sustainability.

Fe, Zn, and Cu in the Organic Fraction of Soils with Different Textures Under Intense Use of Agrochemicals in Flower Cultivation

Francisco Luan Almeida Barbosa et al.

Summary: In flower production, the use of agrochemicals leads to the addition of heavy metals in the soil, and organic matter (OM) plays a crucial role in their solubility and dynamics. This study aimed to quantify Fe, Zn, and Cu contents in the chemical and physical fractions of OM in soils with different textures. Results showed higher metal contents in A2 compared to NV2, while A1 had no significant difference compared to NV1. The study suggests the need for monitoring to prevent metal accumulation in cultivated soils, especially in clay soils.

Assessment of potentially toxic metal(loid)s contamination in soil near the industrial landfill and impact on human health: an evaluation of risk

Waqar Ahmad et al.

Summary: The generation of solid waste is increasing due to rapid urbanization and industrialization, and the leachate leakages from landfills pose a threat to human health. This study analyzed the composition of metals and metalloid in soil samples using inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometric studies. The results showed that the levels of metals in the soil were within the permissible limits set by international standards. However, soil contamination with mercury and cadmium posed an ecological risk. Children were found to have the highest exposure to metals through soil, and the cancer risk for chromium was observed to be at the lower edge.

Pollution Characteristics, Source Identification, and Health Risk of Heavy Metals in the Soil-Vegetable System in Two Districts of Bangladesh

M. Nur E. Alam et al.

Summary: The excessive human activity on vegetable farms in Bangladesh due to climate change, food security, and self-sufficiency goals has led to the spread of harmful heavy metal exposure. A study was conducted to assess the toxic metals exposure, characteristics, and human health risk in the soil-vegetable system of two locations in Bangladesh. The results showed higher concentrations of lead (Pb) in vegetable samples compared to the World Health Organization (WHO) allowable limit, and moderate levels of cadmium (Cd) from common sources. However, the human health risks from metal exposure were found to be ineffective in evaluating noncarcinogenic risk patterns and within acceptable range for probable carcinogenic risk patterns. Location B was slightly more vulnerable than location A in terms of metal exposure and pollution distribution.

An approach to quantify heavy metals and their source apportionment in coal mine soil: a study through PMF model

Shubham Singh et al.

Summary: Mining activities in opencast coal mines lead to contamination of surrounding soil with heavy metals, and this study aimed to quantify the concentration of heavy metals in soil near the mines. The positive matrix factorization (PMF) model was used to assess pollution sources. The results showed that soil contamination was mainly due to chromium (Cr) in mining areas, and contamination decreased with increasing distance from the mines. The PMF model identified zinc (Zn), nickel (Ni), and manganese (Mn) as major contributors to pollution. This study concluded that soil contamination from coal mining can be mitigated through ecological restoration and phytoremediation.

Seasonal pollution and risk assessment of heavy metals in atmospheric dust from coal mining area

H. Wang et al.

Summary: Coal mining and coal-fired power plants contribute to atmospheric pollution and health risks due to heavy metal contamination. This study focuses on the pollution characteristics of six heavy metals in atmospheric dust in Xuzhou coal mining area and the potential health risks to residents. The results show that the concentrations of all heavy metals exceeded permissible limits in both winter and summer seasons, with higher levels of Cu, Pb, and Zn in the summer. Inhalation of atmospheric dust dominated by As, Cr, and Pb poses a non-carcinogenic health risk to inhabitants. Furthermore, As and Cr may pose a cancer risk to both children and adults if the current situation continues. Urgent mitigation strategies are needed to address the health risks faced by the residents in this area.
