GPS and InSAR derived evidences of intra-basin stress and strike-slip tectonics in the vicinity of 2001 (M7.7) earthquake, Kachchh, western India

Rakesh K. Dumka et al.

Summary: Based on nearly a decade of GPS data, the geodetic investigation of the Kachchh Rift Basin (KRB) in western India reveals regional compressive stress and the existence of strike-slip and thrust motion. The geological observations corroborate the measurement model.

Re-estimation of the location and size of the pre-instrumented 1 September 1803 Garhwal-Kumaon Himalaya earthquake: Evidence from site characterization and strong motion seismology

Kapil Mohan et al.

Summary: This study attempts to resolve the source, path, and site characterization issues of the 1803 Garhwal-Kumaon Himalaya earthquake by estimating peak ground accelerations and correlation between estimated and reported intensities. The study suggests that the earthquake occurred at a depth of 20 km in the least seismic attenuation zone with a magnitude of 8.1.

Co-seismic landslides in the Sikkim Himalaya during the 2011 Sikkim Earthquake: Lesson learned from the past and inference for the future

Mayank Joshi

Summary: Sikkim, a northeastern state of India, holds a unique position in India's tourism map. Despite the threat of natural disasters such as earthquakes and landslides, the state attracts a large number of visitors every year. In recent years, some earthquakes have occurred in the region, but the latest one did not cause significant damage. However, the vulnerability of buildings in the area to seismic activity remains a concern, highlighting the need for measures to protect lives and vital infrastructure.

Response of water springs towards an earthquake: A case study from Sikkim Himalaya

Saurabh Singh Barfal et al.

Summary: This study explores the impact of earthquakes on springs in the Himalayan region. The research found that earthquakes can cause some springs to dry up, while increasing the flow rate of others. This suggests that the seismic activity should be considered in spring rejuvenation policies.

Structural attributes and paleostress analysis of Quaternary landforms along the Vigodi Fault (VF) in Western Kachchh region

Sneha Mishra et al.

Summary: This paper elucidates the deformational and kinematic characteristics of the NW-SE trending Vigodi Fault and its associated subsidiary faults in the western Kachchh basin, using paleostress inversion technique. It is found that NE-SW compressive stress dominates the regional area, while the local area is affected by transpressional stress exhibiting oblique slip motion. The combined observations can be used for seismic hazard estimation and mitigation planning in the study area.

Micro-seismic hazard assessment of Ahmedabad city, Gujarat (Western India) through near-surface characterization/soil modeling

Kapil Mohan et al.

Summary: Micro-seismic hazard estimation in Ahmedabad city was conducted based on near-surface characterization and soil modeling. Various methodologies were adopted to assess seismic perspective, delineate engineering bed layer, model soil properties, simulate strong ground motion, and estimate surface strong-motion. The study considered both far-field and near-field earthquake scenarios, providing peak ground acceleration and spectral acceleration distribution maps for different structure types.

Lithospheric resistivity structure of the 2001 Bhuj earthquake aftershock zone

K. K. Abdul Azeez et al.

Summary: The study indicates that the lithospheric resistivity structure in the Bhuj earthquake aftershock zone is characterized by low resistive lithospheric mantle, possibly due to a combination of interconnected melts and aqueous fluid in the upper mantle. Furthermore, a subvertical conductive channel coinciding with the Kutch Mainland Fault may transport fluids from the deep lithosphere to the shallow crust.

Delineation of tectonically active zones in the Island Belt Uplift region, Kachchh Basin, western India: A geomorphic and geodetic approach

Chirag Jani et al.

Summary: The study identified tectonically active zones along the Island Belt Uplift (IBU) by analyzing the Normalized Steepness Index (Ksn) and morphotectonic features, showing that Pachham Uplift (PU) and Bela Uplift (BU) are the most active, Khadir Uplift (KU) exhibits moderate activity, and Chorar Uplift (CU) is least active. The results were validated by comparing with Gradient Length Anomaly (GLA) and Differential Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (DInSAR) data, indicating ongoing seismic activities in the identified active zones. Active deformation rates were calculated using Global Positioning System (GPS) data, and the results were consistent with the Ksn analysis.

Quaternary Landform Development in the Central segment of tectonically active Kachchh Mainland Fault zone, Western India

Girish Ch Kothyari et al.

Summary: The study investigates the landforms in the central segment of Northern Hill Range (NHR), finding that the Kachchh Mainland Fault (KMF) is influenced by climatic changes and tectonic activity, with the oldest arid phase dating back to around 28 ka and 25 ka, and the younger Middle Holocene event occurring around 4.3 ka, suggesting a correlation between enhanced uplift and erosional processes.
