A GPU-accelerated sharp interface immersed boundary method for versatile geometries

Apurva Raj et al.

Summary: We introduce a GPU-accelerated sharp interface Immersed Boundary (IB) method for versatile geometries on a staggered Cartesian grid. The current IB solver accurately predicts flow around both finite and negligible thickness arbitrary surfaces, with improved accuracy near sharp edges. The proposed method tracks complex geometries on a structured Cartesian grid using a modified signed distance algorithm, and applies boundary conditions by reconstructing flow variables on near boundary nodes in fluid and solid domains. The solver's accuracy is demonstrated for low Reynolds numbers and various stationary and moving rigid geometries with sharp edges relevant to engineering applications. The paper also discusses GPU optimization and achieves significant speedup on NVIDIA V100 GPU for three-dimensional oscillating sphere simulation.

Vortex-Induced vibration suppression for a cylinder with random grooves inspired by rough tree bark

Baoshou Zhang et al.

Summary: The vortex-induced vibration (VIV) response of a 2-degree-of-freedom cylinder with random grooves is numerically investigated using the Reynolds Average Navier-Stokes (RANS) method. The effects of the random groove on VIV suppression are discussed, and the coverage ratios (k) of the random groove are varied. It is found that the VIV amplitude is greatly suppressed when k = 25%, while the effect is not significant for k = 75% and k = 100%.

On the study of vortex-induced vibration of circular cylinders covered with different roughness

Chenlin Sun et al.

Summary: The study investigates the vortex-induced vibration (VIV) responses of cylinders with different roughness heights and coverage ratios. The experimental results show that surface roughness can effectively suppress VIV and narrow the lock-on region. Moreover, with the increase in coverage ratio, the vortex formation length increases, the Strouhal number decreases, and the turbulent kinetic energy and Reynolds stresses increase in the wake.

Numerical investigations on the flow control over bumped surface circular cylinders

Javad Farrokhi Derakhshandeh et al.

Summary: This study investigates external flow-induced forces on circular cylinders with bumped surfaces in laminar flow regimes, revealing that the presence of bumps significantly alters vortex dynamics and reduces drag and lift coefficients. Among the square, triangular, and dimpled surfaced cylinders examined, the square bumped surface exhibits the strongest negative vorticity when theta = 90 degrees compared to the others. Additionally, maximum lift coefficient is achieved when the bump is located at theta >= 45 degrees, while minimum drag force occurs at theta = 0 degrees and Re = 150.

Spatio-temporal symmetry breaking in the flow past an oscillating cylinder

Puneet S. Matharu et al.

Summary: The study focuses on flow past a cylinder with prescribed oscillations, showing that an increase in amplitude leads to a change in the shedding vortices topology from 2S to P+S. By directly computing time-periodic solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations, it is demonstrated that the transition between the two vortex shedding patterns arises through a spatio-temporal symmetry-breaking bifurcation of the time-periodic 2S solution. Bistability is observed, with both 2S and P+S patterns potentially seen in experiments.

Numerical investigation on vortex-induced vibration suppression of the cactus-inspired cylinder with some ribs

Wei Wang et al.

Summary: The vortex-induced vibration (VIV) responses of a cactus-inspired cylinder with ribs were numerically investigated, showing that increasing the number of ribs can suppress VIV responses and reduce the amplitude ratios. Additionally, the lock-in region becomes wider as the number of ribs increases.

A high-throughput hybrid task and data parallel Poisson solver for large-scale simulations of incompressible turbulent flows on distributed GPUs

Hadi Zolfaghari et al.

Summary: The paper introduces a more algebraically simpler yet more advanced parallel implementation for solving the Poisson problem on a large number of distributed GPUs. The combination of data parallelism and task parallelism reduces communication overhead, leading to a significant decrease in time-to-solution and computational cost for the Poisson problem.

Numerical simulation of flow of a shear-thinning Carreau fluid over a transversely oscillating cylinder

Md. Irshad Alam et al.

Summary: The study presents a numerical simulation of Carreau fluid flow over a transversely oscillating cylinder, comparing its flow behavior with Newtonian fluid under different oscillation amplitudes and frequencies. Different vortex shedding patterns were observed in different oscillation modes, with notable differences in flow structures between Carreau and Newtonian fluids at higher oscillation amplitudes. This difference was attributed to the behavior of diffusion terms in the vorticity transport equation, and the impact of Carreau fluid properties on flow structures and vorticity dynamics was discussed.
