An efficient stratified sampling scheme for the simultaneous estimation of small failure probabilities in wind engineering applications

Srinivasan Arunachalam et al.

Summary: With the development of performance-based engineering frameworks for extreme winds, there is a need for more efficient estimation of failure probabilities associated with multiple limit states, including collapse. To address this, an optimal stratified sampling-based simulation scheme is proposed, which has several advantages over standard Monte Carlo simulation in dealing with high-dimensional uncertain spaces and multiple limit state functions. The proposed scheme shows promise in reducing variance compared to MCS and has potential for wider applicability in performance-based wind engineering.

Generalized Stratified Sampling for Efficient Reliability Assessment of Structures against Natural Hazards

Srinivasan Arunachalam et al.

Summary: Performance-based engineering for natural hazards involves rigorous evaluation of uncertain structural behavior under extreme stochastic loads. This study proposes a generalized stratified sampling scheme for estimating failure probabilities associated with multiple limit states. It includes two phases of sampling: the first for generating strata-wise samples and estimating strata probabilities, and the second for estimating strata-wise failure probabilities. The proposed scheme improves efficiency by incorporating Markov Chain Monte Carlo Phase-I sampling and optimal Phase-II sampling based on user-specified target coefficients of variation.

A framework for the efficient reliability assessment of inelastic wind excited structures at dynamic shakedown

Wei-Chu Chuang et al.

Summary: The introduction of performance-based wind engineering has opened up possibilities in designing wind excited structural systems with controlled inelasticity. This paper presents a stochastic simulation-based reliability assessment framework for assessing the reliability of structural systems at dynamic shakedown. The study shows that there is a significant increase in reliability at dynamic shakedown compared to component and system first yield.

Reliability-Based Collapse Assessment of Wind-Excited Steel Structures within Performance-Based Wind Engineering

Srinivasan Arunachalam et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a probabilistic collapse assessment framework for steel structures, which integrates high-fidelity nonlinear structural modeling and wind-tunnel-informed stochastic wind load model to perform nonlinear time history analysis. The framework efficiently estimates reliabilities associated with rare events and provides critical discussions on collapse mechanisms, nonlinear behavior, and fragility functions of residual and peak story drifts.

An active-learning method based on multi-fidelity Kriging model for structural reliability analysis

Jiaxiang Yi et al.

Summary: This paper proposes an active-learning method based on a multi-fidelity Kriging model for structural reliability analysis, which determines the location and fidelity level of the updated sample by maximizing the augmented expected feasibility function AEFF, and introduces a new stopping criterion to ensure proper iteration. Comparison results show that the proposed method can provide accurate failure probability estimation with less computational cost.

Multi-fidelity modeling with different input domain definitions using deep Gaussian processes

Ali Hebbal et al.

Summary: Multi-fidelity approaches combine high-fidelity and low-fidelity datasets to improve prediction accuracy. Gaussian processes and deep Gaussian processes are popular methods, with the latter enhancing expressive power by considering nonlinear correlations between fidelities. However, existing methods only consider the case where inputs of different fidelity models are defined over the same domain.

Multi-fidelity Monte Carlo for seismic risk assessment applications

D. Patsialis et al.

Summary: This study examines a multi-fidelity Monte Carlo implementation to reduce computational burden in probabilistic seismic risk assessment. By leveraging biased evaluations from a low-fidelity model and using simulations from a high-fidelity finite element model, an unbiased Monte Carlo estimation process is established. Optimal simulation numbers from each model are selected to minimize variability in risk predictions.
