Does Shared Positivity Make Life More Meaningful? Perceived Positivity Resonance Is Uniquely Associated With Perceived Meaning in Life

Michael Prinzing et al.

Summary: Pleasure and meaning are often perceived as opposing pursuits, but research shows that pursuing meaning can lead to pleasure. This study investigates the inverse process, showing that specific kinds of pleasant states can foster a sense of meaning in life. The perception of positivity resonance, characterized by mutual care and synchrony, is found to be meaningful and to build social resources that contribute to a sense of meaning. Overall, this study suggests that coexperienced, caring, and synchronous pleasant states are important for cultivating a sense of meaning in life.

Differences between genders in the subjective well-being of students participating in PISA 2018

Emilly Cavalheiro Esidio et al.

Summary: Adolescence is a critical period for cognitive personality and maturation development, during which subjective well-being levels decrease. This article investigates the potential gender differences in the three dimensions of subjective well-being and estimates each component (life satisfaction, positive effect, and negative effect) through exploratory factorial analysis. Using Pisa 2018 data, the differences between genders are measured using Oaxaca-blinder decomposition. The estimation indicates that girls have lower levels of subjective well-being than their male peers in all three factors. These results are important for understanding gender differentials in SWB and developing policies for school-going adolescents.

Positivity Resonance in Long-Term Married Couples: Multimodal Characteristics and Consequences for Health and Longevity

Jenna L. Wells et al.

Summary: This study tested the construct validity of positivity resonance and its longitudinal associations with health. Results showed that greater positivity resonance in conflict interactions between married couples predicted less steep declines in health and increased longevity. The findings validate positivity resonance as a multimodal construct, support the utility of the BIPR measure, and provide initial evidence for its characterization as a positive health behavior.
