Low-head dams facilitate the native invasion of downstream fishes to subtropical headwater streams, China

Qiang Li et al.

Summary: Based on fish data from 25 first-order streams within an important tributary of the Yangtze River, the study found that low-head dams facilitate the invasion of native-invasive fish to headwater streams in regions where native fish species are completely dominant.

Effects of land use on the β-diversity of fish assemblages in subtropical headwater streams, China

Jialing Qiao et al.

Summary: Land use related to human activities has a significant impact on fish diversity in headwater streams. This study found that land use has a significant effect on the β-diversity of stream fishes, mainly due to high spatial autocorrelation and agricultural land use intensity. Urban and garden land use did not have a significant impact on β-diversity. Protection and recovery of riparian zones can mitigate the effects of agriculture on fish assemblage structures in headwater streams.

Relations between land use and fish species richness in Neotropical coastal lagoons

Tais de Fatima Ramos Guimaraes et al.

Summary: This study explored the relationship between land use and fish species richness in coastal lagoons in Southeast and South Brazil. The results showed that agriculture and urbanization had different impacts on fish richness around the lagoons. In the Southeast, richness was negatively associated with agriculture and positively associated with urbanization, while in the South, richness was positively associated with agriculture and negatively associated with urbanization. The findings suggest that freshwater coastal lagoons are more sensitive to land use compared to brackish lagoons.

Relationships between environmental heterogeneity and fish beta diversity in a tropical bay

Rafaela de Sousa Gomes-Goncalves et al.

Summary: This study investigated the variability in fish community composition and its relationship with environmental heterogeneity in estuarine shallow waters. The results showed that more urbanized areas had greater environmental heterogeneity and higher beta diversity, suggesting the need to reduce urbanization effects on these habitats for effective conservation measures.

Environmental heterogeneity increases dissimilarity in zooplankton functional traits along a large Neotropical river

Barbhara Isabella Oenning Ribeiro et al.

Summary: This study examined the effects of tributaries on environmental heterogeneity and zooplankton beta diversity in the Upper Parana River. The results showed that total beta diversity was positively correlated with environmental heterogeneity, while turnover and nestedness were influenced by specific environmental variables and geographic distance.

A century of anthropogenic river alterations in a highly diverse river coastal basin: Effects on fish assemblages

Diego Moraga et al.

Summary: The global increase in human population is leading to the conversion of land for anthropogenic uses, impacting lotic ecosystems. This study examines the effects of urbanization on river ecosystems in Chile, revealing a decrease in native species richness and an increase in introduced species. The middle areas, with a history of agricultural and forestry land use, experienced a steeper decline in native species richness.

Effects of low-head dams on fish assemblages in subtropical streams: Context dependence on local habitat and landscape conditions

Qiang Li et al.

Summary: This study found that the effects of low-head dams on fish assemblages vary spatially, with significant differences in species turnover and functional nestedness. There were significant variations in taxonomic and functional diversity among basins, as well as turnover and nestedness rates between different reference types. Environmental factors had a greater impact on functional diversity than taxonomic diversity.

Variation in processes structuring fish assemblages as inferred from metacommunity analyses: Differences between headwater and adventitious streams within a river network

Kai Tan et al.

Summary: This study examined fish metacommunity processes and structures in headwater and adventitious streams in the Xin'an Basin, China, finding that the two stream types have similar environmental heterogeneity but different levels of assemblage dissimilarity and riverine immigrants. While both stream types showed strong species turnover, headwater streams exhibited nested and quasi-nested structures while adventitious streams showed a Clementsian structure. The study suggests that different metacommunity processes may occur in streams with distinct river network positions, with spatial position within river networks having a weak effect on stream fish metacommunity structuring.

Scale-depended effects of hydromorphology and riparian land-use on benthic invertebrates and fish: implications for large river management

Miha Knehtl et al.

Summary: This study compared the effects of riparian land-cover and hydromorphology on benthic invertebrate and fish assemblages in large rivers. Results showed that hydromorphology had a greater impact on BI and fish, especially at the largest 5,000 m scale. While riparian land-cover explained less biotic variability, riparian length still had significant effects on BI and fish.

Fish assemblages and water quality in pampean streams (Argentina) along an urbanization gradient

Juan Martin Paredes del Puerto et al.

Summary: The Matanza Riachuelo Basin is heavily polluted and shows a gradient of change in water quality and fish assemblages from rural to urbanized areas. Water quality deterioration, especially in dissolved oxygen concentration and presence of contaminants, significantly impacts the fish community structure, leading to a decrease in richness and diversity. Understanding the relationship between land use, water quality, and fish assemblages is crucial for developing effective environmental remediation policies.
