Novel shear thickening gel/high-performance fiber reinforced flexible composites: Multi-velocity impact and functional properties

Zixuan Liu et al.

Summary: This article investigates the application of shear thickening gel (STG) as a substrate for flexible protective materials. STG exhibits superior dimensional stability and does not leak or delaminate when used for a long time. STG/high-performance fiber flexible composites have a high-energy absorption capacity for multi-velocity impact. The article reveals the shear thickening mechanism of STG and provides a theoretical foundation for the performance analysis of STG composites.

Study on impact resistance of Nano-SiO2 reinforced STG/Kevlar composites

Huan Lin et al.

Summary: In this paper, a novel STG/SiO2/Kevlar flexible protective composite was prepared and its superior impact resistance was verified. The STG/SiO2/Kevlar exhibited higher performance in terms of yarn pull-out force and bearing capacity compared to STG/Kevlar and pure Kevlar. The impact test results showed that STG/SiO2/Kevlar had stronger resistance against knife and pistol bullets. The enhancement mechanism of impact resistance for STG/SiO2/Kevlar composites was also investigated.

Functionalization as a way to enhance dispersion of carbon nanotubes in matrices: a review

L. Lavagna et al.

Summary: Three decades of scientific scrutiny on carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have shown that challenges in handling and dispersing CNTs, as well as their limited interaction with other materials due to their structure, can impact technological applications. A thorough understanding of CNT properties and selecting appropriate dispersion procedures are essential for achieving desired nanocomposite properties. Advanced knowledge on CNT synthesis, functionalization methods, and dispersion techniques is crucial for addressing these challenges.

Extreme Dynamic Performance of Nanofiber Mats under Supersonic Impacts Mediated by Interfacial Hydrogen Bonds

Jizhe Cai et al.

Summary: By introducing aramid nanofibers to enhance inter-fiber interactions in carbon nanotubes, the researchers were able to improve the performance of nanofibrous materials, particularly in terms of specific energy absorption during supersonic impacts. The breaking and reformation of hydrogen bonds at ultrahigh-strain rates showed a strain-rate-dependent dynamic performance enhancement.

Yarn dynamic tensile behavior and meso-scale numerical simulation method for STF-Kevlar fabrics

Lulu Liu et al.

Summary: Shear thickening fluids (STFs) were found to enhance the energy absorption capacity of Kevlar fabrics in soft-wall containment casings. A mesoscale numerical simulation method was developed for predicting the properties of STF-Kevlar fabrics, which was verified through yarn tests and ballistic impact test. The study showed that STF-treated fabrics exhibited improved energy absorption characteristics with increasing tensile strength.
