Hot Workability of the Multi-Size SiC Particle-Reinforced 6013 Aluminum Matrix Composites

Changlong Wu et al.

Summary: The size and distribution of ceramic particles in aluminum matrix composites significantly affect their properties. When the particle size is too small, agglomeration occurs, leading to poorer mechanical properties. If the particle size is too large, the bonding between particles and alloy is weakened, resulting in reduced mechanical properties. The impact of multi-size ceramic particles on hot workability needs further investigation.

Effect of SiC and WC Reinforcements on Microstructural and Mechanical Characteristics of Copper Alloy-Based Metal Matrix Composites Using Stir Casting Route

Priyaranjan Samal et al.

Summary: This study compares the mechanical behavior and microstructural characteristics of Cu matrix hybrid composites reinforced with SiC-Gr(p) and WC-Gr(p) fabricated through the stir casting process. The dispersion of reinforced particles in the composites was uniform, and the presence of SiC, WC, and Cu alloy was confirmed by XRD. The addition of hard ceramic materials improved the tensile behavior and microhardness of the Cu-based MMCs, with the WC-Gr reinforced composites exhibiting superior mechanical properties compared to the SiC-Gr reinforced composites. The fracture surfaces indicated ductile fracture in both hybrid composites.

Synergistic strengthening of Al-SiC composites by nano-spaced SiC-nanowires and the induced high-density stacking faults

Yiming Wu et al.

Summary: Aluminum alloys have low yielding and flow strengths, but a super-strong Al-30vol%SiC composite with a flow strength of 1.18 GPa and a uniform strain of 16.0% was reported. The alloy exhibited strengthening from nano-spaced SiC nanowires and high-density stacking faults (SFs) rarely stabilized in Al. SFs showed excellent thermal stability up to 320 degrees C and could be regained by thermal cooling even after elimination during annealing at 600 degrees C.

Achieving simultaneous enhancement of strength and ductility in Al matrix composites by employing the synergetic strengthening effect of micro- and nano-SiCps

Kan Liu et al.

Summary: The incorporation of micro-and nano-sized SiC particles into an aluminum matrix through powder metallurgy results in a unique ultrafine-grained microstructure. The dual-scale reinforcements enhance dislocation accumulation and strain hardening capacity. The composites with both micro-SiC particles and nano-SiC particles exhibit improved tensile properties compared to composites with only micro-SiC particles.

Exploring the potential of FSW-ed Al-Zn-Mg-Cu-based composite reinforced by trace in-situ nanoparticles in manufacturing workpiece with customizable size and high mechanical performances

Tian-Shu Liu et al.

Summary: This study proposes a novel method to address the challenge of manufacturing large-size workpieces with desirable strength-plasticity synergy in Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloys by joining extruded profiles of Al-Zn-Mg-Cu-based composite reinforced by trace in-situ TiC-TiB2 nanoparticles through friction stir welding (FSW). The nanoparticles can weaken the grain boundary segregation, avoid hot cracking, promote nucleation of precipitates, increase the proportions of low-angle and high-angle grain boundaries, and enhance the strength and plasticity of the composite. Additionally, the nanoparticles inhibit abnormal grain growth during post-weld heat treatment, strengthening the FSW-ed joint.

Microstructure evolution and mechanical properties strengthening in laser powder bed fusion of high-strength SiC and TiB2 co-reinforced Al-Zn-Mg-Cu composites

Ning Li et al.

Summary: A SiC and TiB2 particles reinforced Al-Zn-Mg-Cu matrix composite was fabricated using laser powder bed fusion (LPBF). The effects of ceramic reinforcements on the phase composition, microstructures, grain crystallization, and mechanical properties were investigated. A multi-level microstructure with ceramic reinforcements and nanoprecipitates has been developed. The mechanical properties were enhanced due to superior interfacial bonding strength, fine grain strengthening, solution strengthening, second phase strengthening, and substructural strengthening. This work demonstrated the potential for fabricating AMCs using LPBF with Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloy as the matrix.

Molecular Dynamics Simulation of the Interaction between Dislocations and Iron-Vanadium Precipitates in Alpha Iron: Effect of Chemical Composition

Sepehr Yazdani et al.

Summary: In this study, molecular dynamics simulations were used to investigate the interaction between dislocations and Fe-V precipitates with different vanadium concentrations. The results showed that increasing the vanadium concentration led to a stronger interaction between the dislocations and precipitates, resulting in a higher energy dislocation line and an increased critical stress for depinning the dislocations. Additionally, the vanadium concentration affected the shape and movement speed of the dislocations, as well as the configuration of the junction between a/2[111] and a/2[100] dislocations and void formation after the cutting process. The results also indicated that the structure of the precipitates changed from crystalline to amorphous, with a decreasing degree of amorphization as the vanadium concentration increased.

SiC particle reinforced Al matrix composites brazed on aluminum body for lightweight wear resistant brakes

Monica Ferraris et al.

Summary: This work aimed to develop an aluminum alloy brake disc with a wear-resistant SiC particle reinforced aluminum matrix composites (SiC/Al) on its surface. Different joining technologies, such as brazing and shrink fitting, were used to connect SiC/Al to the aluminum alloy. A functional graded structure was created by gradually increasing the SiC particle content in the aluminum matrix composites. Tribological tests demonstrated that the aluminum alloy brake disc with SiC/Al brazed on its surface offers promising technical opportunities.

Hot Deformation Characteristics and Microstructure Evolution of SiCp/Al2014 Composite Fabricated by Powder Metallurgy

Cuige Dong et al.

Summary: The stress-strain behavior of hot-extruded SiCp/Al2014 composites during hot deformation was studied through isothermal compression tests, resulting in the construction of a processing map at a true strain of 0.6. It was found that flow stress increased with decreasing temperature and increasing strain rate, indicating different hot deformation mechanisms at play. Instability of the composites was more likely to occur at high strain rates and low temperatures, leading to the definition of two optimal deformation processing windows on the processing map.
