Genome-wide analysis of UDP-glycosyltransferases family and identification of UGT genes involved in abiotic stress and flavonol biosynthesis in Nicotiana tabacum

Qing Yang et al.

Summary: In this study, a genome-wide analysis of UGT genes in tobacco was conducted, resulting in the identification of 276 NtUGT genes. These genes were divided into 18 phylogenetic subgroups. Through protein-protein interaction analysis, three groups of proteins were found to interact with NtUGT proteins. Expression analysis revealed the distinct role of NtUGT genes in resistance to cold, drought, and flavonoid biosynthesis. Enzymatic analysis showed the activity of seven NtUGT proteins on myricetin, cyanidin, and flavonol substrates. Overexpression of NtUGT217 resulted in increased content levels of quercetin and kaempferol compounds in tobacco leaves.

The apiosyltransferase celery UGT94AX1 catalyzes the biosynthesis of the flavone glycoside apiin

Maho Yamashita et al.

Summary: Apiose is a unique branched-chain pentose found in many plant metabolites. The study identified AgApiT as the key enzyme responsible for apiin biosynthesis, which exhibits strict specificity for the sugar donor UDP-apiose and produces various apiose-containing flavone glycosides in celery. The research also provides insights into the structural features of AgApiT and the gene encoding apiosyltransferase in the celery genome.
