Interfacial engineering of nickel/vanadium based two-dimensional layered double hydroxide for solid-state hydrogen storage in MgH2

Dongqiang Gao et al.

Summary: Ni/V2O3 nanoparticles with heterostructures were successfully prepared by hydrogenating NiV-LDH. MgH2 + 7wt% Ni/V2O3 showed superior hydrogen absorption and desorption performances compared to pure MgH2 and MgH2 + 7wt% NiV-LDH. The addition of 7wt% Ni/V2O3 significantly reduced the initial discharging temperature of MgH2 and improved the hydrogen absorption capacity. Furthermore, MgH2 + 7wt% Ni/V2O3 exhibited better cycling performance and the microstructure analysis revealed the uniform distribution of heterostructural Ni/V2O3 nanoparticles. Rating: 8/10

Hydrogen storage behaviour of Cr- and Mn-doped Mg2Ni alloys fabricated via high-energy ball milling

Xusheng Liu et al.

Summary: This paper describes the efficient preparation of an Mg2Ni alloy for hydrogen storage via high-energy ball milling mechanical alloying. The alloy's amorphisation degree increases with ball-milling time. After 4 hours of ball milling, partially amorphous alloys show the best hydrogen storage performance. Partial substitution of Ni with Cr and Mn improves the thermodynamics, kinetics, and cycling performance of the alloy. Mg2Ni0.8Mn0.2 exhibits the best cycling and hydrogen absorption/desorption kinetics.

Capacity degradation mechanism of ternary La-Y-Ni-based hydrogen storage alloys

Xiangyang He et al.

Summary: La-Y-Ni-based alloys have potential as hydrogen storage materials, but their rapid capacity degradation limits their applications. This study investigates the capacity degradation mechanism of these alloys and the effect of the La/Y ratio on their cyclic stability. The expansion/contraction properties of the subunits in the hydrogen solid solution and hydrides lead to lattice strain and pulverization. Adjusting the subunit ratio can decrease lattice strain and improve cyclic stability. The cyclic stability in the electrolyte decreases with a lower La/Y ratio, opposite to the trend observed in the solid/H-2 system. Y-poor and Y-rich alloys are suitable for electrochemical and solid-state hydrogen storage applications, respectively.

Summary: Investigated several methods to improve the hydrogen storage capacity and rate in epoxycyclopentane (ECP) hydrates at moderate pressure. Found that ECP hydrate particles promote hydrate formation and decreasing particle size increases gas storage capacity and rate. Dispersing ECP hydrate particles on stainless steel mesh further increases gas storage capacity and rate. These findings provide fundamental insights into clathrate hydrate-based H2 storage technology development.

First principles investigation of the substitutional doping of rare-earth elements and Co in La4MgNi19 phase

Yuchen Liu et al.

Summary: In this study, the structure, phase stability, and electronic structure of La4MgNi19 alloy with partial substitution of La by Pr, Sm, Gd, Nd and Co substitution of Ni were investigated using density functional theory. The calculation results showed that La4MgNi19 alloy exhibited negative enthalpy of formation, indicating thermodynamic stability. When La was substituted, Pr, Nd, Sm, and Gd preferably occupied the La(4f) site. The addition of doping elements reduced the phase stability, with Pr substituted La4MgNi19 showing the highest structural stability. Co substitution of Ni destabilized the crystal structure, and the system still exhibited metallic character after substitution.

Summary: Co-substituted YMgNi4-based alloys exhibited higher hydrogen contents and lower hydrogen absorption and desorption reaction pressures than unsubstituted alloys. The effects of Co-substitution on atomic arrangements were clarified through synchrotron radiation powder X-ray diffraction, neutron diffraction, and inelastic neutron scattering. The formation of gamma-phase deuteride in the Co-substituted alloy led to higher hydrogen contents and lowered hydrogen absorption and desorption reaction pressures.

Electrochemical features of Ce2Ni7-type La0.65Nd0.15Mg0.25Ni3.20M0.10 (M = Ni, Mn and Al) hydrogen storage alloys for rechargeable nickel metal hydride battery

Wenfeng Wang et al.

Summary: Rare earth-Mg-Ni-based alloys with Ce2Ni7-type superlattice structures have gained attention as negative electrode materials for nickel metal hydride batteries due to their good overall electrochemical performance. However, the complex impact of element and phase composition on the electrochemical properties hinders their further promotion. Investigating the effect of substituted Ni-side elements on the electrochemical properties of Ce2Ni7-type La-Nd-Mg-Ni-M-based (M = Ni, Mn, and Al) alloys, it was found that the La0.60Nd0.15Mg0.25Ni3.20Al0.10 alloy electrode exhibited superior durability with a capacity retention rate of 91.1% after 100 cycles, 2.1% higher than the La0.60Nd0.15Mg0.25Ni3.30 alloy with the same structure. The alloy with Mn delivered the highest discharge capacity and had advantage of rate performance, even achieving 206.9 mAh g(-1) at a large discharge current density of 5 C. The study aims to assist in designing hydrogen storage alloys with improved electrochemical performance by clarifying the effect of substituted Mn and Al elements.
