Simulation of future forest and land use/cover changes (2019-2039) using the cellular automata-Markov model

Hasan Aksoy et al.

Summary: This study used the cellular automata-Markov model to simulate and assess the changes in forest cover and land use/land cover (LULC) between 2019 and 2039. The model's performance was evaluated and found to be reliable. The results showed an increase in total forest area, settlement, and water between 1999 and 2019, while the agriculture area decreased. The simulation results for 2019-2039 predicted a decrease in total forest area, residential and water surface areas, and agriculture area. Tracking these changes will be beneficial for decision making and strategy development by forest planners and managers.

Analysis of the Evolution of Climatic and Hydrological Variables in the Tagus River Basin, Spain

Gabriel Mezger et al.

Summary: This study analyzes the evolution of annual streamflow in 16 sub-basins of the Tagus River basin in Spain and its relationship with climate and human factors. The research reveals a decreasing trend in streamflow, an increasing trend in air temperature, and unclear trends in precipitation. Residuals from regression models suggest that non-climatic factors likely contributed to the decline in streamflow.

Ecological Vulnerability in the Red Soil Erosion Area of Changting under Continuous Ecological Restoration: Spatiotemporal Dynamic Evolution and Prediction

Xinyi Wu et al.

Summary: This study evaluates and predicts the ecological vulnerability of the red soil erosion area in Changting, revealing significant spatial differences and identifying driving factors such as topography, meteorology, and economic and social variables. The analysis shows a decrease in ecological vulnerability over the past twenty years, with a predicted improvement in the future. These findings highlight the effectiveness of continuous ecological management in restoring the soil erosion area of Changting.

Multi-Scale Spatiotemporal Pattern Analysis and Simulation (MSPAS) Model with Driving Factors for Land Cover Change and Sustainable Development Goals: A Case Study of Nepal

Wenqi Jia et al.

Summary: In pursuit of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the study proposed a multi-scale spatiotemporal pattern analysis and simulation (MSPAS) model with driving factors for SDGs. The model used population information from the census and combined administrative and regional divisions to design multi-scale analysis criteria. The contribution and correlation of land cover change (LCC) or population were quantified at multiple scales. The MSPAS model was applied to explore the land cover change pattern in Nepal from 2016 to 2019, with a focus on four specific land cover classes. The result demonstrated the performance of the MSPAS model and provided insights for sustainable urbanization and agriculture in SDGs.

Assessment of Future Land Use/Land Cover Scenarios on the Hydrology of a Coastal Basin in South-Central Chile

Camila Orellana Pereira et al.

Summary: This study assessed the effects of land use and land cover change on hydrological processes in a coastal basin in South-Central Chile. By simulating future scenarios, the researchers found that the impacts on the water balance components were not significant, except for soil water transfer and groundwater flow. The study highlights the importance of evaluating the effects of land use change on coastal basin hydrology and the interconnection between land use governance and water resources.

Impacts of land use/land cover and climate changes on soil erosion in Muga watershed, Upper Blue Nile basin (Abay), Ethiopia

Tatek Belay et al.

Summary: The study found that soil erosion rate in the Muga watershed has been increasing due to expansion of crop cultivation and loss of vegetation. Both future land use/land cover changes and climate change are projected to exacerbate soil loss issue, emphasizing the need for measures to mitigate the negative impacts.

Analysis of the Future Land Use Land Cover Changes in the Gaborone Dam Catchment Using CA-Markov Model: Implications on Water Resources

Botlhe Matlhodi et al.

Summary: The study utilized geospatial modeling techniques to analyze past and future land use changes in the Gaborone dam catchment, predicting an increase in cropland, built-up areas, and bare land, as well as a decrease in shrubland, tree savanna, and water bodies. The increase in built-up and cropland areas may lead to an increased demand for water resources, potentially impacting water quality and quantity. Furthermore, reductions in water bodies could contribute to water shortages and worsen drought conditions, while a decrease in vegetal cover could result in increased runoff and flash floods.

Sethi Sibanda et al.

Summary: This study utilized the Cellular Automata-Markov chain model, Landsat time series data, and contingent valuation method to investigate land use/land cover changes in a specific area from 1984 to 2015, and projected future trends for 2025, 2035, and 2045. The results indicated a significant decrease in wetland area due to droughts and agricultural encroachment, with a further decline expected in the future. The findings highlight the importance of quantifying future wetland area changes for effective conservation strategies.
