Bronchoalveolar lavage cytology in children with chronic unexplained cough and severely neurologically impaired children

Ivan Pavic et al.

Summary: We compared the cellular composition of bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) fluids in children with chronic unexplained cough (group 1) and severely neurologically impaired children with chronic or recurrent respiratory problems (group 2) with the BAL cytology of children without pulmonary or systemic diseases (group 3). The results showed significant differences in the total number of cells, percentage of neutrophils, and percentage of lipid-laden macrophages between the groups. This highlights the usefulness of BAL fluid cytology in determining the cause of chronic unexplained cough and respiratory problems in neurologically impaired children.

Gastroesophageal reflux disease in children: What's new right now?

Palittiya Sintusek et al.

Summary: Gastroesophageal reflux (GER) is common in children and refers to the involuntary passage of stomach contents into the esophagus. GERD, on the other hand, is a less common pathological process that causes troublesome symptoms. Factors contributing to the development of GERD include abnormal lower esophageal sphincter relaxations, defects in esophageal mucosal defense, impaired motility and clearance, and anatomical defects like hiatal hernia. Diagnosis and management should be tailored to the underlying causes and to prevent complications. This review provides up-to-date information on the pathogenesis, diagnostic evaluation, and management of GERD in children.

Preschool Wheezing and Gastro-Esophageal Reflux: -Causal or Casual Coincidence? Update from Literature

Melissa Borrelli et al.

Summary: Gastroesophageal reflux (GER) and wheeze are common conditions in children, with a debated causal relationship. More research is needed to confirm or rule out the association between preschool wheezing and GER.

The relationship between gastroesophageal reflux disease and recurrent wheezing in children

Vasile Valeriu Lupu et al.

Summary: Studies suggest an association between gastroesophageal reflux and recurrent wheezing. This study aimed to explore this relationship and evaluate the outcome after treatment with proton pump inhibitors in children with recurrent wheezing. Results showed that the majority of patients with recurrent wheezing also had gastroesophageal reflux, and most of them showed improvements after 2 months of treatment.

The Role of Combined Multichannel Intraluminal Impedance-pH Monitoring in Infants with Brief, Resolved, Unexplained Events

Ivan Pavic et al.

Summary: This study found that both acid and non-acid reflux play significant roles in the pathogenesis of GER-related BRUE in infants. MII-pH monitoring was more sensitive in diagnosing GERD in infants who experienced BRUE.
