Water vapour transmission properties of uncoated and coated wood-based panels

Antonio Copak et al.

Summary: Understanding the moisture transfer properties of wood-based building materials is crucial for proper building design and prevention of moisture-related problems. This study investigated the water vapor transmission properties of particleboard, oriented strand board (OSB), and birch plywood, revealing that particleboard had the highest water vapor permeability and coatings can reduce the water vapor permeability of wood-based panels.

Experimental measurements of soiling impact on current and power output of photovoltaic panels

Ming-Lang Tseng et al.

Summary: The study examined the impact of three different types of soiling (dust, leaf, rainfall) on the current-voltage and power-voltage characteristics of a solar panel in various locations. Measurements of current and power losses were taken over a 50-day period with a 10-day interval. The soiling ratio was found to be a reliable parameter for assessing the impact of soiling. Results showed that leaves had the most detrimental effect, causing a 38% power loss compared to dust and raindrop, with the lowest loss in current density and power attributed to raindrop (29%). The study also revealed the critical impact of leaf-soiling on defect generation and reduced photocurrent generation.

Conceptualizing the Circular Economy (Revisited): An Analysis of 221 Definitions

Julian Kirchherr et al.

Summary: In the past decade, the concept of circular economy (CE) has gained increasing attention from scholars and practitioners. However, while there has been both consolidation and differentiation in the interpretations and implementations of CE, the article highlights that there is a need for conceptual consolidation for practical purposes. The study also reveals that scholars are advocating for a fundamental systemic shift to enable CE within supply chains and that sustainable development is frequently seen as the principal aim of CE.

Life cycle assessment of end-of-life engineered wood

Shahjadi Hisan Farjana et al.

Summary: This paper aims to identify sustainable circular economy pathways for waste MDF and particleboard management through life cycle assessment, comparing landfill, recycling, and energy recovery scenarios. The results show that material recovery is preferred over energy recovery in most impact categories, except for climate change and fossil fuel depletion. The management of waste engineered woods has less impact than the production process, and energy recovery has the greatest toxicity impacts.

Indoor Air Quality in Elderly Centers: Pollutants Emission and Health Effects

Teresa M. Mata et al.

Summary: The global aging population, especially in developed countries, is more vulnerable to adverse indoor air quality, which has been highlighted by the recent COVID-19 pandemic. However, there is a lack of sufficient research on the impact of indoor air quality on the health of elderly individuals. Further studies are needed to identify the specific impacts and improve indoor air quality to protect the health of the elderly.
