Laser-Induced Selective Metallization on Polymers for Both NIR and UV Lasers: Preparing 2D and 3D Circuits

Summary: In this study, a new laser sensitizer, copper pyrophosphate, was proposed for laser-induced selective metallization. The conductivities of the copper layers obtained by near-infrared and ultraviolet laser activation were measured. The adhesion of the copper layers to the composites was evaluated. This study also investigated the color change, microstructure, and composition changes of the composites before and after laser activation. Furthermore, decorative patterns and interdigitated capacitor patterns were successfully fabricated on 3D plastic parts, demonstrating the potential application prospects of laser-induced selective metallization.

Summary: Hybrid additive manufacturing technology (HAM) is an advanced way of traditional additive manufacturing (AM) that allows for the direct fabrication of fully functional end-use products. Using a combination of vat photopolymerization (VPP) 3D printing and laser-activated electroless plating (ELP), the proposed HAM technology can successfully create conformal 3D printed electronics. By developing a functional liquid photopolymer doped with antimony tin oxide (ATO) and titania (TiO2) nanoparticles, the technology achieves high fabrication accuracy and customizable full-functional electronic products.

Maskless Fabrication of Highly Conductive and Ultrastretchable Liquid Metal Features through Selective Laser Activation

Summary: In this study, a facile and scalable patterning method for liquid metal conductors on an elastomer substrate is reported. Laser-activated patterns are used as versatile templates to define arbitrary liquid metal patterns. The as-prepared liquid metal features show excellent conductivity, high resolution, ultrahigh stretchability, and electromechanical durability. The practical suitability of liquid metal conductors is demonstrated by fabricating a stretchable LED matrix and a smart sensing glove. The maskless fabrication technique introduced here allows versatile patterning of liquid metal conductors with affordable costs, which may stimulate a broad range of applications in stretchable electronic devices and systems.

Intelligent Cubic-Designed Piezoelectric Node (iCUPE) with Simultaneous Sensing and Energy Harvesting Ability toward Self- Sustained Artificial Intelligence of Things (AIoT)

However, the integration and sustainability of AIoT nodes are currently limited. In this study, an intelligent piezoelectric AIoT node called iCUPE is designed, which integrates energy harvesting and self powered sensing modules. It achieves continuous power supply over a wide frequency range and high-precision multifunctional vibration recognition. The proposed iCUPE is scalable and essential for AIoT implementation in diverse environments.

Splashing-Assisted Femtosecond Laser-Activated Metal Deposition for Mold- and Mask-Free Fabrication of Robust Microstructured Electrodes for Flexible Pressure Sensors

Summary: In this study, a method for customizing microstructured flexible electrodes by femtosecond laser-activated metal deposition is proposed. The method takes advantage of catalyzing particles scattered during femtosecond laser ablation and is suitable for moldless, maskless, and low-cost fabrication of microstructured metal layers. The developed flexible capacitive pressure sensor with microstructured electrodes exhibits high sensitivity, low detection limit, rapid response/recovery time, and excellent stability. Moreover, the proposed method can also fabricate a pressure sensor array in a maskless manner for spatial pressure mapping.

Fabrication of polyetheretherketone (PEEK)-based 3D electronics with fine resolution by a hydrophobic treatment assisted hybrid additive manufacturing method

Summary: This paper proposes a hybrid AM method combining FDM and LAM for manufacturing 3D electronics based on PEEK. Conformal copper patterns were deposited on 3D-printed PEEK parts, and a high level of adhesion was achieved. The application of a hydrophobic coating on the FDM-printed PEEK promoted better catalytic selectivity and improved the resolution of electroless plated copper lines.

A room temperature ammonia gas sensor based on cerium oxide/MXene and self-powered by a freestanding-mode triboelectric nanogenerator and its multifunctional monitoring application

Summary: In this study, a high-precision CeO2/V2C ammonia sensor capable of operating at room temperature was prepared by an in situ polymerization method. The sensor showed excellent response, low detection limit, stability, and fast response/recovery time for low concentrations of ammonia gas. Circuit modules of Bluetooth, Near Field Communication (NFC), and IoT data were designed based on the sensor parameters, enabling factory emission detection, personnel safety management, and gas leak inspection. All monitoring data are visualized on both the computer and cell phone sides.

Summary: Efficient and durable catalyst-based energy harvesting devices have attracted attention by integrating low-cost materials with low-temperature techniques. A synergistic Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalyst was developed by combining ZnO nanorods structures with stainless-steel mesh as three-dimensional (3D) structures, showing excellent water-splitting characteristics, especially after passivation with ultrathin cobalt oxide layers. The established large surface area, fine energy band alignments, and synergistic effects contribute to the enhanced catalytic activity of the electrodes.
