Richness of Nigrospora spp. (Apiosporaceae) in Manihot esculenta in Brazil and the description of three new species

Amanda Cupertino de Queiroz Brito et al.

Summary: Manihot esculenta, cassava, is an important staple food in developing countries. Limited surveys have been conducted on the endophytic fungi of this plant. This study collected healthy cassava stems in Brazil and identified Nigrospora spp. through morphological features and phylogenetic analyses. Two new occurrences and four new records of Nigrospora associated with cassava were reported, along with the description of three new species.

The fungal endobiome of seaweeds of the Andaman Islands, India

M. B. Govinda Rajulu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the fungal endophyte assemblage in 17 seaweed species from the Andaman Islands, India. It was found that brown and red algae harbored various endophytic fungi, with some species exhibiting high colonization frequency. Trichoderma species showed the highest colonization frequency in the seaweeds.

Comparative Genomics and Transcriptomics Depict Marine Algicolous Arthrinium Species as Endosymbionts That Help Regulate Oxidative Stress in Brown Algae

Young Mok Heo et al.

Summary: The study revealed that Arthrinium spp. may be pathogenic to plants, with six out of seven metabolites in their genomes associated with plant virulence. Additionally, gentisyl alcohol production in algicolous Arthrinium spp. is influenced by mannitol, suggesting a symbiotic mechanism with brown algae. This is the first study to analyze the lifestyle of marine algicolous Arthrinium spp. at the molecular level.

Marine endophytic fungi associated with Halopteris scoparia (Linnaeus) Sauvageau as producers of bioactive secondary metabolites with potential dermocosmetic application

Maria da Luz Calado et al.

Summary: Marine fungi, especially endophytic species, are rich sources of structurally diverse bioactive compounds. This study identified eight fungal taxa associated with Halopteris scoparia, some of which showed promising bioactivities for dermocosmetic applications. Chemical analysis revealed the presence of echinulin and neoechinulin A in an Aspergillus chevalieri extract, explaining its high antioxidant and UV photoprotective capacities. Further efforts in understanding the ecology of halo/osmotolerant fungi are essential for exploring their potential bioactivities.

Optimization of PhysicoChemical Parameters for Production of Cytotoxic Secondary Metabolites and Apoptosis Induction Activities in the Culture Extract of a Marine Algal-Derived Endophytic Fungus Aspergillus sp.

Sidhartha Taritla et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that endophytic fungi associated with marine brown algae have potential cytotoxic and apoptosis induction effects. In particular, the ethyl acetate extract of Aspergillus sp. showed the highest cytotoxicity on HeLa cells, with the presence of compounds known to be cytotoxic. This research adds to the understanding of the marine algae-fungal endophyte relationship and their potential for producing cytotoxic compounds.
