Water Charge Transfer Accelerates Criegee Intermediate Reaction with H2O-Radical Anion at the Aqueous Interface

Qiujiang Liang et al.

Summary: Criegee intermediates (CIs) are important carbonyl oxides that react with atmospheric trace chemicals, influencing global climate. This study reveals the molecular-level origin of CI’s interfacial reactivity at water microdroplet surfaces, showing that water molecules exhibit strong reactivity and accelerate CI-water reactions.

High Electric Fields on Water Microdroplets Catalyze Spontaneous and Fast Reactions in Halogen-Bond Complexes

Chenghui Zhu et al.

Summary: The use of external electric fields as green and efficient catalysts in synthetic chemistry has gained significant attention. This study takes advantage of the spontaneous high electric field at the air-water interface of sprayed water microdroplets to facilitate ultrafast reactions in several halogen bond systems. The results suggest that microdroplet chemistry holds great potential for reactions facilitated by high electric fields and offers an alternative solution to the scalability problem.

The Spontaneous Electron-Mediated Redox Processes on Sprayed Water Microdroplets

Shuihui Jin et al.

Summary: By spraying bulk water into microsized droplets, these water microdroplets exhibit various unique properties, such as accelerating chemical reactions and triggering spontaneous reactions that cannot occur in bulk water. The high electric field at the air-water interface of microdroplets is believed to be the cause of these unique chemistries. The redox reactions on sprayed water microdroplets are essentially processes using electrons as the charge carriers.

Can electric fields drive chemistry for an aqueous microdroplet?

Hongxia Hao et al.

Summary: Reaction rates of common organic reactions can significantly increase by several orders of magnitude in aqueous microdroplets compared to bulk solution. However, the reasons for this rate acceleration are still poorly understood. By studying the electric field distributions at the air-water interface, it has been found that the electric field alignments along free O-H bonds at the surface are on average around 16 MV/cm larger than those in the interior of the water droplet. This difference in electric field distribution may contribute to the enhanced surface reactivity observed in microdroplets.

Fast Sulfate Formation Initiated by the Spin-Forbidden Excitation of SO2 at the Air-Water Interface

Chu Gong et al.

Summary: The oxidation of SO2 to sulfate in aerosol particles is a crucial process in atmospheric chemistry. However, there is a significant discrepancy between observed and simulated sulfate concentrations during severe haze events. This study provides evidence for the direct excitation of SO2 to its triplet states using UVA photons at an air-water interface, followed by reactions with water and O2 to rapidly form sulfate. These findings suggest that photochemical oxidation of SO2 at the air-water interface may be an important source of sulfate aerosols under polluted haze conditions.

Capture of Hydroxyl Radicals by Hydronium Cations in Water Microdroplets

Dong Xing et al.

Summary: Despite the high stability of bulk water, microdroplets exhibit different properties, such as the presence of hydroxyl radicals at the air-water interface. In this study, OH· was detected as (H4O2)+, a hydroxyl radical combined with a hydronium cation, and successfully captured with caffeine and melatonin. Key oxidation radical intermediates were observed, providing important mechanistic information.

High Electric Field on Water Microdroplets Catalyzes Spontaneous and Ultrafast Oxidative C-H/N-H Cross-Coupling

Dongmei Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, we demonstrate the spontaneous and ultrafast oxidative C-H/N-H cross-coupling reactions by simply spraying water solutions of the substrates into microdroplets at room temperature. The reactions are significantly accelerated by the electric field generated at the microdroplets peripheries. Mass spectrometric analysis of radical intermediates supports the mechanism of the reaction.

Spontaneous Formation of Hydrogen Peroxide in Water Microdroplets

Joseph P. Heindel et al.

Summary: There is growing evidence that chemical reactions in micrometer-sized liquid droplets can occur at significantly accelerated rates. However, the molecular mechanism behind this enhancement is still unclear. In this study, the authors investigate the energy step of hydroxide ions converting to hydroxyl radicals in microdroplets, and find that the ionization energy of partially solvated hydroxide ions is greatly reduced at the droplet's interface.

Spontaneous oxidation of I- in water microdroplets and its atmospheric implications

Dong Xing et al.

Summary: Organic iodine molecules released by algae in the ocean are known to be the major source of I and I-2 in the atmosphere through photodissociation. This study shows the spontaneous and ultrafast oxidation of I- into I, which further transforms into I-2(-) and I-3(-) in water microdroplets, providing a previously unknown source of I and I-2 in atmospheric water. Mass spectrometric evidence suggests that hydroxyl radicals generated in water microdroplets are responsible for the oxidation of I-. These findings suggest that microdroplet chemistry may significantly contribute to atmospheric redox chemistry.

Investigating the competing E2 and SN2 mechanisms for the microsolvated HO- (H2O)n=0-4 + CH3CH2X (X = Cl, Br, I) reactions

Xiangyu Wu et al.

Summary: In this study, the influence of solvent on the competing E2 and S(N)2 reactions was investigated by analyzing the reactions of microsolvated HO (H2O)(n) anions with CH3CH2X (X = Cl, Br, I). The results showed that the barrier heights of the reaction channels increased with incremental hydration and were correlated with several thermodynamic, geometric, and charge parameters. The inv-S(N)2 pathway was found to be favored over the anti-E2 pathway in the E2/S(N)2 competition.

Electrostatically Tuning the Photodissociation of the Irgacure 2959 Photoinitiator in the Gas Phase by Cation Binding

Samuel J. P. Marlton et al.

Summary: In this study, the low-lying electronic states of the Norrish-type I photoinitiator Irgacure 2959 complexed with a single metal cation were investigated using photodissociation action spectroscopy in the gas phase. The charge of the cations was found to influence the key electronic energy levels, leading to shifts in the electronic states. The oriented electric field generated by the cation affects the energy gap between different electronic states, ultimately impacting the yield of radical photoproducts.

Experimental Evidence of Long-Lived Electric Fields of Ionic Liquid Bilayers

Mattia Belotti et al.

Summary: Ionic liquids can form long-lived double layers generating detectable electric fields, with negative voltage pulses leading to stable near-surface dipolar layers. The alignment of individual ion dipoles to external electric field pulses correlates with the resulting open circuit potential, providing insight into interfacial ordering phenomena. A stable overscreened structure is more likely to form if the interface undergoes crowding first, potentially explaining discrepancies in literature data on relaxation kinetics of near-surface structures in ionic liquids.

Reaction Acceleration Promoted by Partial Solvation at the Gas/Solution Interface

Lingqi Qiu et al.

Summary: The kinetics of organic reactions in microvolumes are influenced by factors such as gas/solution interfacial area, reaction molecularity, and solvent polarity. Partial solvation at the gas/solution interface significantly accelerates bimolecular reactions in microdroplets, and this reaction acceleration can be controlled by selecting an appropriate solvent for manipulating selectivity.
