SQUAMOSA PROMOTER BINDING PROTEIN-LIKE 9 and 13 repress BLADE-ON-PETIOLE 1 and 2 directly to promote adult leaf morphology in Arabidopsis

Tieqiang Hu et al.

Summary: The transition from juvenile to adult phase is a crucial period in a plant's life cycle. This transition is regulated by the decrease in miR156/157 levels and the increase in activity of SPL proteins. In Arabidopsis, this transition is associated with changes in leaf shape, particularly an increase in leaf blade length to width ratio. In this study, the researchers showed that ectopic expression of SPL9 and SPL13 results in enlarged and elongated leaves, similar to the blade-on-petiole1 (bop1) bop2 double mutant. They found that BOP1/BOP2 expression is down-regulated in successive leaves, which correlates with the amount of miR156 and is antagonistic to the expression of SPL9 and SPL13. SPL9 and SPL13 directly bind to the promoters of BOP1/BOP2 to repress their expression, leading to delayed establishment of proliferative regions in leaves and promoting more blade outgrowth while suppressing petiole development.

The Roles of Gibberellins in Regulating Leaf Development

Faujiah Nurhasanah Ritonga et al.

Summary: Plant growth and development are influenced by various factors, including phytohormones, with gibberellins (GAs) playing a crucial role. The synthesis of GAs involves key genes such as GA20oxs, GA3oxs, and GA2oxs, and their levels and synthesis are affected by factors such as light, carbon availability, stresses, phytohormone crosstalk, and transcription factors. GAs induce the degradation of DELLA proteins during biosynthesis, which in turn controls important developmental processes through interactions with other proteins. The levels of bioactive GAs are inversely related to DELLA proteins, and their absence activates GA responses.

Genetic variation in CaTIFY4b contributes to drought adaptation in chickpea

Rutwik Barmukh et al.

Summary: Chickpea production is susceptible to drought stress. A genetic region called 'QTL-hotspot' has been identified to control chickpea growth and improve crop production under drought. A non-synonymous substitution in the CaTIFY4b transcription factor has been found to regulate seed weight and organ size in chickpea, and ectopic expression of CaTIFY4b in a different plant species enhances root growth under water deficit. Gene expression analysis suggests that CaTIFY4b may regulate organ size under water deficit by modulating the expression of a transcriptional co-activator called GIF1. KLU/CYP78A5, a Cytochrome P450 Monooxygenase Identified via Fox Hunting, Contributes to Cuticle Biosynthesis and Improves Various Abiotic Stress Tolerances

Takuma Kajino et al.

Summary: This study identified a gene, EsCYP78A5, which can confer acquired osmotolerance to Arabidopsis thaliana plants. Overexpression of EsCYP78A5 or its Arabidopsis ortholog, KLU, improved not only acquired osmotolerance but also tolerances to osmo-shock, salt-shock, oxidative, and heat stress. Overexpression of KLU also resulted in growth retardation, increased accumulation of anthocyanin, cuticular wax, cutin monomers, and very-long-chain fatty acids, and reduced endoplasmic reticulum stress induced by abiotic stresses. These findings suggest that KLU plays a crucial role in the development of abiotic stress tolerances by influencing the biosynthesis of the cuticle and its components, accumulation of cuticular wax, and modulation of ER stress.

Xiaowei Lin et al.

Summary: This study reveals the interaction between the Leaf and Flower Related (LFR) protein and SWI3B component of the chromatin-remodeling complex, highlighting their role in regulating transcription factors and auxin metabolism enzymes during Arabidopsis leaf development. Inhibition of SWI3B resulted in a leaf phenotype similar to the loss-of-function mutants of LFR, indicating their collaborative function in leaf development. The findings demonstrate the importance of LFR-SWI3B interaction in influencing gene expression and leaf morphology.

Highly pleiotropic functions of CYP78As and AMP1 are regulated in non-cell-autonomous/organ-specific manners

Takashi Nobusawa et al.

Summary: The research on Arabidopsis thaliana suggests that CYP78A isoforms play roles in plastochron, leaf size, and leaf senescence, with differentiated functions based on organ-specific expression. These isoforms are believed to be involved in the synthesis of a mobile signal molecule that has pleiotropic functions distinct from classical phytohormones.

Bromodomain-containing subunits BRD1, BRD2, and BRD13 are required for proper functioning of SWI/SNF complexes in Arabidopsis

Kamila Jaronczyk et al.

Summary: SWI/SNF chromatin remodelers are evolutionarily conserved multiprotein complexes that use ATP hydrolysis to change chromatin structure. Arabidopsis bromodomain-containing proteins BRD1, BRD2, and BRD13 are likely true SWI/SNF subunits with functional redundancy, cooperating with the bromodomain of BRM ATPase. Loss of function of BRD proteins led to developmental abnormalities similar to SWI/SNF mutants.

The ubiquitin-interacting motif-type ubiquitin receptor HDR3 interacts with and stabilizes the histone acetyltransferase GW6a to control the grain size in rice

Qiong Gao et al.

Summary: This study identified the grain size regulatory module HDR3-GW6a in rice, which has the potential to be a critical target for crop yield improvement. The interaction between HDR3 and GW6a modulates grain size by altering cell proliferation in spikelet hulls and delaying protein degradation, resulting in enhanced histone acetylation and regulation of downstream genes common to both proteins. Furthermore, genetic analysis demonstrated that HDR3 functions in the same pathway as GW6a to regulate grain size.

Phytochrome regulates cellular response plasticity and the basic molecular machinery of leaf development

Andres Romanowski et al.

Summary: Plants are plastic organisms that optimize growth in response to environmental changes by detecting light signals and inducing the shade-avoidance syndrome (SAS), which restricts leaf blade size by limiting cell division and expansion. Phytochromes regulate major developmental pathways controlling cell proliferation, DNA processes, and ribosome biogenesis throughout leaf development.

Multi-omics analysis of early leaf development in Arabidopsis thaliana

Mohammad Amin Omidbakhshfard et al.

Summary: Plant organ growth is driven by cell division and expansion, with the transition from proliferation to expansion crucial for determining final organ size and plant yield. Major metabolic reprogramming occurs as cells exit proliferation and enter expansion, particularly with the establishment of photosynthesis in leaves. This study utilized untargeted proteomics and metabolomics analyses to profile young Arabidopsis thaliana leaves at different growth stages, providing a valuable resource for uncovering novel regulators of plant growth and understanding the interface of development and metabolism in other species.

ARF2 represses expression of plant GRF transcription factors in a complementary mechanism to microRNA miR396

Matias Beltramino et al.

Summary: Members of the GRF family of transcription factors are important for plant growth and development, with many being post-transcriptionally repressed by miR396. Mutations in the miR396-targeting sequence were found in some GRFs, leading to a release of their repression. In Brassicaceae species, some GRFs are not regulated by miR396, instead being controlled by ARF2 through evolutionarily conserved promoter sequences.
