In situ construction of 3D low-coordinated bismuth nanosheets@Cu nanowire core-shell nanoarchitectures for superior CO2 electroreduction activity

Yanjie Hu et al.

Summary: In this study, 3D bismuth nanosheets@Cu nanowire core-shell nano-architectures were in situ constructed on Cu foam as efficient electro-catalysts for CO2RR into formic acid, achieving high selectivity and large current density. The superior activity is attributed to the large catalytic surface area related to the porous structure and high intrinsic activity induced by lattice defects on the preferential exposure of the Bi (110) facet. The presence of the Cu NW support significantly enhances the Bi reducibility and boosts the C-terminal hydrogenation of CO2.

Coordinating the Edge Defects of Bismuth with Sulfur for Enhanced CO2 Electroreduction to Formate

Lei Lv et al.

Summary: In this study, a catalyst with excellent selectivity for electrocatalytic CO2 reduction reaction (ECO2RR) and inhibition of competing hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) has been developed by coordinating the edge defects of bismuth (Bi) with sulfur. The catalyst exhibits high product selectivity, with a HCOO- Faraday efficiency of approximately 95% and an HCOO- partial current of approximately 250 mA cm(-2) under alkaline electrolytes. Density function theory calculations reveal the mechanism behind the improved selectivity and provide guidance for the design of advanced ECO2RR catalysts based on bismuth.

Summary: In this study, a gas penetration electrode called bismuth hollow fiber (Bi HF) was used to efficiently reduce CO2 to formate with a formate faradaic efficiency of 93% and a current density of 1.13 A cm-2 at ambient temperature and pressure. Finite element analysis and density functional theory demonstrate that the superior activity of Bi HF is attributed to the synergetic combination of unlimited CO2 feeding to triphasic interface reactions and selective reduction induced by contractive Bi-Bi bond.
