Behavioral and Neuroimaging Research on Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD): A Combined Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Recent Findings

Emily Subara-Zukic et al.

Summary: This study provides a systematic review and meta-analysis of recent experimental studies on the motor control, cognitive, and neural basis of Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD). The findings suggest deficits in voluntary gaze control, cognitive-motor integration, motor learning, and abnormal neural structure and function in individuals with DCD. Compensatory mechanisms for motor control deficits were also identified.

Short report presenting preliminary evidence of impaired corticomuscular coherence in an individual with Developmental Coordination Disorder

J. V. V. Parr et al.

Summary: This study aimed to measure the functional connectivity between the brain and muscle in individuals with DCD using corticomuscular coherence. The findings revealed impaired communication between the brain and muscles in individuals with DCD, as evidenced by less localized CMC compared to typically developing individuals.

Did We Get Sensorimotor Adaptation Wrong? Implicit Adaptation as Direct Policy Updating Rather than Forward-Model-Based Learning

Alkis M. Hadjiosif et al.

Summary: The theory of motor system adaptation involves both forward-model-based learning and direct policy learning mechanisms, with experiments suggesting that the latter is more consistent with implicit adaptation under extreme perturbations. This challenges traditional beliefs about adaptation and suggests a new perspective on the process by which errors result in motor adaptation.

The Differential Effects of Auditory and Visual Stimuli on Learning, Retention and Reactivation of a Perceptual-Motor Temporal Sequence in Children With Developmental Coordination Disorder

Melody Blais et al.

Summary: This study investigates how children with and without developmental coordination disorder (DCD) learn, retain, and reactivate temporal sensorimotor sequences. Results show that children with DCD have a synchronization deficit with isochronous stimuli and struggle with non-isochronous sequences, particularly relying on visual stimuli. In contrast, typically-developing children benefit from both auditory and visual information for sequence memorization.

Procedural learning and retention of audio-verbal temporal sequence is altered in children with developmental coordination disorder but cortical thickness matters

Margaux Le et al.

Summary: The study investigated the impact of sensory modalities on synchronization, learning, and retention of temporal verbal sequences in children with and without DCD, finding a general deficit in synchronization of regular temporal verbal sequence in children with DCD, but a specific deficit in learning and retention of auditory non-regular verbal temporal sequence. The results also suggested a possible alteration in audio-verbal coupling in DCD and the potential for clinical practice based on temporal parameters with visual stimuli.
