Serum fatty acid profiles in breast cancer patients following treatment

Alicja Pakiet et al.

Summary: The aim of this study was to examine the serum fatty acids (FAs) profiles in breast cancer survivors to assess if the FA levels normalize. After treatment for breast cancer, the patients' serum FA profile differs from the profile before treatment and from controls, especially 12 months after treatment. Some changes may reflect lifestyle changes in breast cancer survivors and have an impact on the risk of recurrence.

Monomethyl branched-chain fatty acids-a pearl dropped in the ocean

Yuan He et al.

Summary: As an emerging group of bioactive fatty acids, monomethyl branched-chain fatty acids (mmBCFAs) have attracted the interest of domestic and international researchers. They are not only important for growth and development, but also highly correlated with obesity and insulin resistance. Previous studies have shown that mmBCFAs exhibit anti-inflammatory and anticancer effects. This review provides a comprehensive summary of mmBCFAs' distribution, biosynthesis pathway, detection methods, and their nutrition and health benefits. It also critically examines the current state of the art, upcoming difficulties, and trends in mmBCFAs.

Identification and quantification of branched-chain fatty acids and odd-chain fatty acids of mammalian milk, dairy products, and vegetable oils using GC/TOF-MS

Xue Yang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the presence of branched-chain fatty acids (BCFAs) and odd-chain fatty acids (OCFAs) in mammalian milk, dairy products, and vegetable oils. A total of 72 fatty acids, including 16 BCFAs and 10 OCFAs, were identified and quantified using GC/TOF-MS. The content of BCFA and OCFA varied among different milk sources and fat sources in infant formulas. The findings provide a scientific basis for further research on high-BCFA and OCFA dairy products.

Association of branched chain fatty acids with cardiometabolic disorders in humans: a systematic review

Nagam Anna Yehia et al.

Summary: Despite advancements in treatment, the increasing frequency of cardiometabolic disorders remains a concern. Primary prevention through diet and lifestyle approaches is crucial. Dairy consumption has been inversely associated with these disorders, possibly due to branched chain fatty acids (BCFAs) it contains.

Association of circulating branched chain fatty acids with insulin sensitivity and beta cell function in the PROMISE cohort

Nagam A. Yehia et al.

Summary: Branched chain fatty acids (BCFAs) are saturated fatty acids with a methyl branch, primarily obtained from the diet. Limited literature suggests that BCFAs may have a protective role in cardiometabolic disorders. This study investigated the associations of circulating BCFAs with insulin sensitivity and glucose concentrations. Specific BCFAs, such as iso14:0 and anteiso15:0, were found to be important in cardiometabolic phenotypes underlying type 2 diabetes.

Hepatic and serum branched-chain fatty acid profile in patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease: A case-control study

Jose Ignacio Martinez-Montoro et al.

Summary: In this study, the serum and hepatic levels of branched-chain fatty acids (BCFAs) were evaluated in patients with different stages of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). The results showed an increase in hepatic BCFAs in NAFLD patients, but no differences were observed in serum BCFAs. Correlation analysis also revealed a relationship between hepatic BCFAs and histopathological diagnosis, as well as other parameters related to NAFLD. Gene expression analysis indicated an upregulation of BCAT1, BCAT2, and BCKDHA mRNA levels in NAFLD patients.

Monomethyl branched-chain fatty acids: Health effects and biological mechanisms

Paulina Gozdzik et al.

Summary: Branched-chain fatty acids (BCFA) are a group of lipids found in various organisms and have potential health benefits including anti-cancer, lipid lowering, anti-inflammatory, and neuroprotective effects. However, research on BCFA in humans is limited and further studies are needed to confirm and expand these findings to improve our understanding of their relevance to human health and disease.

Dietary patterns and cardiometabolic health: Clinical evidence and mechanism

Wenting Wang et al.

Summary: The search for nutritional interventions for cardiovascular treatment has led to the development of dietary pattern studies. Healthy dietary patterns have been shown to extend lifespan and reduce risks of cardiovascular diseases. This review examines various dietary patterns and their potential mechanisms for cardiovascular disease prevention and treatment, including calorie restriction, intermittent fasting, Mediterranean diet, and plant-based diets. The role of individual gut microbiota in the interaction between diet and cardiovascular diseases is highlighted, suggesting a more personalized nutritional strategy for cardiovascular diseases.

Monomethyl branched-chain fatty acids are critical for Caenorhabitis elegans survival in elevated glucose conditions

Andre F. C. Vieira et al.

Summary: Researchers have discovered a new role for monomethyl branched-chain fatty acids (mmBCFAs) in the survival ability of nematodes under conditions of elevated dietary glucose. The absence of mmBCFAs during glucose stress leads to decreased survival rates, while feeding the nematodes with Bacillus subtilis, a bacteria strain rich in mmBCFAs, rescues their survival rates. Furthermore, it is suggested that mmBCFAs are involved in the PAQR-2 signaling response during glucose stress.

Update on food sources and biological activity of odd-chain, branched and cyclic fatty acids -- A review

Grzegorz Dabrowski et al.

Summary: This review synthesizes recent data on the food sources and physiological properties of odd-, branched-chain, and cyclic fatty acids, highlighting their impact on human health. The estimated daily intake of these fatty acids from typical Western diets is approximately 1.5g, mainly derived from ruminant fat. In Asian countries, significant sources come from spirulina and fish. For vegans and vegetarians, algae, selected plants, mushrooms, and fermented plants are the best sources. However, there are inconsistencies in specific fatty acid data from different sources.

Summary: Branched-chain fatty acids are important components in the meibum lipids secreted from the meibomian glands. Enzymes such as ELOVL1, ELOVL3, and ELOVL7 are responsible for elongating branched-chain acyl-CoAs. Liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry has revealed the predominance of branched-chain lipids in mouse meibomian glands, demonstrating the significance of ELOVL1 in elongating branched-chain VLC acyl-CoAs in vivo.
