Oxidation of nickel in solid oxide cells during electrochemical operation: Experimental evidence, theoretical analysis, and an alternative hypothesis on the nickel migration

Tian-Le Cheng et al.

Summary: This study investigates the mechanism of nickel migration in nickel/yttrium-stabilized zirconia (Ni/YSZ) cermet electrodes through a combination of experimental and theoretical analysis. The results show that NiO is present at the Ni-YSZ interfaces in the active layer of both fuel cells and electrolyzer cells, despite the low nominal oxygen partial pressure at the hydrogen electrode. The volume expansion during Ni oxidation and the outward diffusion nature of NiO growth lead to nickel relocation. Thermodynamic analysis indicates that the oxygen partial pressure near the Ni-electrolyte interface can be higher than at the hydrogen electrode under polarization, promoting Ni oxidation and concentration increase of gaseous Ni(OH)2, thereby facilitating nickel transport. Therefore, a new hypothesis is proposed, suggesting the crucial role of interfacial oxidation of nickel in solid oxide cells.

Understanding the Ni Migration in Solid Oxide Cell: A Coupled Experimental and Modeling Approach

Lea Rorato et al.

Summary: A long-term test of 2000 h has revealed a strong Ni depletion at the electrolyte interface in a typical solid oxide cell operated in electrolysis mode at -1 A.cm(-2) and 750 degrees C. To explain this phenomenon, an electrochemical and phase-field model has been developed, proposing a mechanism that accounts for the impact of polarization on the Ni/YSZ wettability. The simulations based on this model have demonstrated a strong Ni depletion at the electrolyte interface during electrolysis operation, confirming the relevance of the proposed mechanism.

Modeling Ni redistribution in the hydrogen electrode of solid oxide cells through Ni(OH)2 diffusion and Ni-YSZ wettability change

Yinkai Lei et al.

Summary: Ni redistribution in the hydrogen electrodes of solid oxide cells is an important degradation mechanism. This study investigates the interplay between Ni(OH)2 diffusion and Ni-YSZ wettability change, and identifies the driving force of Ni spreading/detachment and the factors affecting Ni redistribution. Two missing pieces in current theory of Ni redistribution are also identified.

A novel multi-physics coupled heterogeneous single-cell numerical model for solid oxide fuel cell based on 3D microstructure reconstructions

Yunpeng Su et al.

Summary: A dynamic heterogeneous single-cell model based on 3D reconstructions of all SOFC components is proposed in this work, which can predict cell performance and analyze the factors affecting polarization characteristics. The model is validated by comparing the predicted current-voltage curves and Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) with experimental data, and then applied in quantifying the performance degradation in a SOFC.

Phase field simulation of anode microstructure evolution of solid oxide fuel cell through Ni(OH)2 diffusion

Yinkai Lei et al.

Summary: The study found that under strictly humid conditions, while the presence of steam gradient leads to nickel redistribution, the formation and diffusion of Ni(OH)(2) do not significantly change the nickel coarsening rate. It is concluded that other competing mechanisms must be responsible for the observed nickel redistribution and enhanced coarsening under humid conditions.

Ni migration of Ni-YSZ electrode in solid oxide electrolysis cell: An integrated model study

Yang Wang et al.

Summary: Through a comprehensive numerical study, it was found that nickel depletion in the fuel electrode of SOEC can lead to nickel phase coarsening, consequently reducing the electrochemical performance of the electrode. Increasing the wettability of the nickel phase can effectively mitigate the reduction of active reaction sites caused by nickel coarsening.

Fine three-dimensional simulation of the heterogeneous anode of a solid oxide fuel cell with direct internal reforming

Qiangqiang Li et al.

Summary: The study developed a heterogeneous model for a DIRSOFC anode based on a microstructure reconstructed using X-ray. It found that total overpotential has an insignificant effect on CH4 conversion rate, but operating temperature has a significant impact on both CH4 conversion rate and the electrical performance of the cell. Additionally, a higher prereforming extent of methane is beneficial for increasing electrical performance.

Ni migration in solid oxide cell electrodes: Review and revised hypothesis

Mogens B. Mogensen et al.

Summary: The degradation mechanism of Ni-YSZ electrodes in SOCs is complex and contradictory, characterized by loss of electrical contact between Ni particles and migration of Ni in the most active part. These issues are significant obstacles to the commercialization of SOC systems.
