Estimating index of sediment connectivity using a smart data-driven model

Haniyeh Asadi et al.

Summary: Connectivity is crucial in studying hydrogeomorphic processes in catchments. We developed a novel method using an artificial neural network (ANN) algorithm to estimate the index of sediment connectivity (IC) based on physical characteristics of catchments. Our findings showed that modelling accuracy was higher within homogeneous sub-sections of catchments compared to the catchment scale, and the use of dynamic parameters improved the performance of the ANN model in estimating IC. This study suggests that the proposed method can be a promising and cost-effective tool for estimating IC at different scales in catchments.

Balancing Sediment Connectivity and Energy Production via Optimized Reservoir Sediment Management Strategies

M. Tangi et al.

Summary: Sediment connectivity is crucial for sustaining fluvial ecosystems and hydropower production, but dams disrupt natural sediment transport processes. This study develops a sediment routing model to assess the impacts of reservoirs and their management strategies on river sediment connectivity. The model predicts a significant reduction in sediment yield to the Mekong River due to dam development, and highlights the trade-offs between hydropower generation and sediment connectivity. The findings emphasize the importance of integrating sediment connectivity models into decision-making frameworks for water and sediment management.

Spatial Patterns of Disconnectivity Explain Catchment-Scale Sediment Dynamics and Transfer Efficiencies

Mike Turley et al.

Summary: This study investigates the sediment dynamics and disconnectivity patterns in Tahoma Creek watershed. It reveals that the connectivity and disconnectivity distribution significantly affect the sediment dynamics and transfer efficiencies. In high-gradient glaciated landscapes, the proglacial zone exhibits high connectivity while downstream areas become increasingly disconnected, resulting in most eroded sediment being redeposited within the catchment. Steep, glaciated watersheds are predominantly disconnected over human timescales.

Intra-annual sediment dynamic assessment in the Wei River Basin, China, using the AIC functional-structural connectivity index

Zhenni Wu et al.

Summary: Hydrological and sediment dynamics on the Chinese Loess Plateau have undergone significant changes over the past six decades, primarily due to large-scale land use changes and water regulation actions. Understanding the mechanism of sediment transport change and its effects is crucial for ensuring food and environmental security. This study utilizes the aggregated index of sediment connectivity (AIC) to evaluate the monthly and annual sediment connectivity in the Wei River Basin at both the basin and sub-basin scales. The results show that AIC has a positive correlation with sediment yield in the Wei and Jing sub-basins, with the Jing sub-basin having the highest sediment connectivity and the Beiluo sub-basin having the lowest. Additionally, rainfall is found to be the most influential factor on sediment connectivity. This study provides valuable insights for regional ecological construction and environmental catchment management.

Impact of land use/cover change (LUCC) on sediment connectivity in small watersheds based on a revised index algorithm

Qin Zhang et al.

Summary: Soil erosion is a significant factor contributing to global land degradation and environmental problems. The study focuses on sediment connectivity, an important indicator of sediment yield and transport capacity. However, the existing index of sediment connectivity does not consider the influence of upslope land use/cover on confluence and corresponding changes in downslope sediment transport. Consequently, an improved sediment connectivity index is proposed. The results show that the index has a significant linear relationship with annual runoff depth and sediment yield modulus in small watersheds. The impact of LUCC on sediment connectivity should not be ignored.

Combined use of UAV-SfM surveys, soil particle tracking with RFID tags and a sediment connectivity index to study plot-scale sediment transport

Manuel Lopez-Vicente et al.

Summary: In this study, the processes of soil erosion at a plot in Fukushima prefecture, Japan were explored using the UAV-SfM method and RFID tag data. Comparison of accuracy between UAV-SfM and TLS measurements and integration of the UAV-SfM method and RFID tag locations were conducted to assess sediment transport. The results showed short transport distances with rill erosion based on RFID tag data, while the UAV-SfM surveys showed an increase in sediment connectivity over the study period, explaining the largest sediment discharge, especially of fine soil particles.

Evaluating sediment connectivity and its effects on sediment reduction in a catchment on the Loess Plateau, China

Summary: This study defined a new revised sediment connectivity index (RIC) by incorporating the functional with the structural components of a sediment routing system. The results showed that values of sediment connectivity were higher in the gullies than in the hill slopes, and the new RIC was illustrated to be an easy-to-run and suitable tool for studying the changing soil erosion and sediment delivery in catchments. Additionally, the study found that different factors, such as rainfall, land use and land cover change, and check dams, contribute to the reduction in sediment yield in the catchment.
