Variation in the dielectric and magnetic characteristics of multiferroic LuFeO3 as a result of cobalt substitution at Fe sites

O. Polat et al.

Summary: Due to its electrical, magnetic, and optical characteristics, LuFeO3 (LFO) has garnered interest from the scientific community. This study prepared powders of LFO, LuFe0.95Co0.05O3, and LuFe0.90Co0.10O3 samples using the solid-state approach. Characterization techniques such as XRD, SEM, and XPS were employed to analyze the samples' crystalline structure, particle size, and oxidation states of Fe and Co. The undoped LFO sample exhibited higher conductivity and dielectric constant compared to the Co-doped LFO samples. Magnetic experiments using VSM showed that Co doping increased the Mr values, which could be attributed to variations in the inclined angles of Fe3+ moments and the growth of magnetocrystalline anisotropy's energy.

Room temperature multiferroicity of hexagonal LuFeO3 and its enhancement by co-doping in Lu0.9Co0.1Fe0.9Ti0.1O3 nanoparticle system

Sukhendu Sadhukhan et al.

Summary: In this work, metastable hexagonal LuFeO3 (LFO) nanoparticles were successfully synthesized in a pure phase and co-doped with Co and Ti to enhance its magnetoelectric behavior. The structural analysis confirmed the formation of the desired hexagonal phase in both bare and doped LFO. The doped LCFTO showed a remarkable enhancement in magnetic and electric properties compared to the bare LFO, making it a promising magnetoelectric multiferroic material for future applications.

The role of Os substitution on structural, magnetic, and optical features of LuFeO3

Ozgur Polat

Summary: LuFeO3 and LuFe1-xOsxO3 (x = 0.05 and 0.10) powders were synthesized via solid-state technique. The morphology and porosity of the samples were observed using scanning electron microscope (SEM). X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) studies showed that Lu existed in the 3+ state, Fe existed in both 2+ and 3+ states, and Os existed in the 4+ state in the doped samples. Raman spectroscopy revealed a decrease in peak intensity and a shift to lower wavenumber values in the Os doped samples. Magnetic studies demonstrated that Os doping increased the I-Ic and Mr values at low temperatures, but not at room temperature. Furthermore, Os doping was found to increase the optical band gap of LFO.

Morphotropic phase boundary in Sm-substituted BiFeO3 ceramics: Local vs microscopic approaches

A. Pakalniskis et al.

Summary: In this study, samarium substituted bismuth ferrite ceramics were prepared by sol-gel synthesis method and studied using various microscopic techniques to investigate the evolution of crystal structure across the morphotropic phase boundary region. The compounds exhibited structural transitions from polar active rhombohedral phase to anti-polar orthorhombic phase and then to non-polar orthorhombic phase within a specific concentration range. The results revealed a coexistence of different structural phases in the compounds, with a notable difference in the concentration range ascribed to the morphotropic phase boundary estimated by microscopic measurements.

Critical Role of Sc Substitution in Modulating Ferroelectricity in Multiferroic LuFeO3

Shiqing Deng et al.

Summary: The study reveals the critical roles of individual Sc substitutional atoms in modulating ferroelectricity at the atomic scale of typical multiferroics, Lu1-xScxFeO3, through advanced microscopy and theoretical studies. It shows that atomic variations in polar displacement stabilized by Sc substitution correlate with local chemical and electronic fluctuations, reinforcing FeO5 trimerization magnitude and Lu/Sc-O hybridization strength. This understanding could lead to engineering emergent functionalities of chemically doped functional materials.

Magnetic structure and multiferroicity of Sc-substituted hexagonal YbFeO3

Y. S. Tang et al.

Summary: This study focuses on stabilizing the hexagonal structure of YbFeO3 through partial Sc substitution and revealing its canted antiferromagnetic state.
