A flexible robust model for blood supply chain network design problem

Soheyl Khalilpourazari et al.

Summary: This research presents a novel multi-objective Transportation-Location-Inventory-Routing (TLIR) formulation for emergency blood supply chain design considering the impact of COVID-19. Flexible uncertain models are proposed to provide risk-averse and robust solutions. The results show that the robust model handles uncertainties more efficiently and finds solutions with significantly lower costs and delivery time. Extensive worst-case analyses demonstrate the robustness of the results. Critical managerial insights are provided to enhance the effectiveness of the supply chain.

The damage effect on the dynamic characteristics of FRP-strengthened reinforced concrete structures

Umberto De Maio et al.

Summary: The present study aims to evaluate the modal properties of reinforced concrete structures strengthened with FRP-based systems under progressive damage. An integrated numerical fracture model, combining a cohesive crack approach and an embedded truss model, was used to simulate the damage phenomena under quasi-static loading conditions. The dynamic response, in terms of natural vibration frequencies, was obtained through solving the small amplitude free oscillations and compared with numerical and experimental results at predefined damage levels. The comparisons demonstrated the beneficial strengthening effect of the FRP system on the static and dynamic structural response, highlighting the applicability of the proposed numerical model for model-based damage identification of FRP-strengthened concrete structures.

Modeling and prediction of short/long term mechanical behavior of FRP-strengthened slabs using innovative composite finite elements

Rui Wu et al.

Summary: This paper proposes two new multilayer composite plate elements to model and analyze FRP-strengthened slabs, addressing challenges related to geometric irregularity and adhesive characteristics. The novelty lies in the macroscopic modeling of substrate, adhesive layer, and FRP sheet in one element, instead of separate modeling. The extension of the study from elastic to viscoelastic using a rheological interface is another novelty. The proposed elements prove to be accurate and computationally efficient in predicting the mechanical behavior of FRP-strengthened slabs, contributing to system design and optimization.

Machine learning prediction of fiber pull-out and bond-slip in fiber-reinforced cementitious composites

Abolfazl Hemmatian et al.

Summary: This study presents a computational model for predicting the maximum fiber pull-out force and corresponding bond slip in fiber-reinforced cementitious composites. Through the development and training of an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) model using an extensive experimental database, it was found that the geometric shape of the fibers and the fiber tensile strength have the greatest impact on the outputs.

Importance analysis of decision making factors based on fuzzy decision trees

Elena Zaitseva et al.

Summary: Classification is an important machine learning technique that can be influenced by various factors, including the quality of input attribute measurements and the importance of different attributes. This paper proposes a new method for determining the most important attributes based on Importance Analysis, commonly used in reliability engineering. The method evaluates attribute importance by investigating the sensitivity of classification to input attributes and identifying the attributes with the greatest impact on the classification result. The application of this method is demonstrated using a Fuzzy Decision Tree, but it can be utilized with any other classifier induction.

FRP bar-reinforced ultra-high-performance concrete plates with a grouting sleeve connection: Development and flexural behavior

Jun-Jie Zeng et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel connection system based on FRP bars and steel grouting sleeves was developed for the prefabrication construction of FRP bar-reinforced UHPC structures. The flexural tests showed that the proposed connection system is reliable, as the failure always occurred outside the connection zone and the crack opening displacements at the connection interface were smaller than 0.2 mm. The connection mode and fiber type had little influence on the first cracking load and the initial bending stiffness of the FRP bar-reinforced UHPC plates, but the horse tooth connection mode provided better ductility.

Hiding in plain sight: What can interpretable unsupervised machine learning and clustering analysis tell us about the fire behavior of reinforced concrete columns?

Aybike Ozyueksel Ciftcioglu et al.

Summary: Machine learning plays an increasingly important role in structural fire engineering. While supervised learning methods are widely used, there has been less focus on unsupervised learning. In this study, we apply unsupervised and interpretable machine learning clustering analysis to investigate the response of fire-exposed reinforced concrete columns. Our analysis shows that the performance of these columns can be grouped into distinct clusters.

Effect of slab and transverse beam on the FRP retrofit effectiveness for existing reinforced concrete structures under seismic loading

Daniel A. Pohoryles et al.

Summary: The seismic behavior of RC structures is significantly affected by the mechanical interactions at beam-column joints. Experimental results show that the presence of slabs and transverse beams can significantly affect the damage progression and failure mechanisms, as well as retrofit effectiveness. Not testing retrofitted joints with slabs and transverse beams may lead to an overestimation of retrofit effectiveness and a focus on joint shear strengthening alone.
