Assessment of Neurological Impairment and Recovery Using Statistical Models of Neurologically Healthy Behavior

Stephen H. Scott et al.

Summary: While many areas of medicine have benefited from the development of objective assessment tools and biomarkers, there have been comparatively few improvements in techniques used to assess brain function and dysfunction. This paper discusses the challenges with using criteria-based ordinal scales to measure brain functions and highlights the potential of kinematic-based measures to overcome these challenges, particularly for clinical research and clinical trials.

Alteration of Resting-state Functional Connectivity in the Sensorimotor Network in Patients with Thalamic Infarction

Miao He et al.

Summary: The study aimed to analyze changes in functional connectivity within the sensorimotor network (SMN) and the relationship between SMN and bilateral thalamus in patients with thalamic infarction (TI) using rs-fMRI. Patients with TI showed decreased FC within SMN in the ipsilesional posterior central gyrus (PCG) but increased FC in the ipsilesional supplementary motor area (SMA) compared to controls. The increased FC in the ipsilesional SMA and between SMN and perilesional thalamus in patients with TI may indicate functional reorganization in patients with somatosensory deficits.

Investigating the neuroanatomy underlying proprioception using a stroke model

Matthew J. Chilvers et al.

Summary: This study highlights the critical importance of temporoparietal and insular regions for accurate proprioception. Lesions not impacting these regions are much less likely to result in impairments. Proprioceptive impairments are more prevalent following right hemisphere lesions than left hemisphere lesions.

Predicting Post-Stroke Somatosensory Function from Resting-State Functional Connectivity: A Feasibility Study

Xiaoyun Liang et al.

Summary: Accumulated evidence suggests that brain functional deficits can be influenced by damage to remote brain regions, and recent neuroimaging advances indicate that stroke impairment can be predicted more accurately by disruption to brain networks. This study demonstrated the feasibility of predicting post-stroke somatosensory function using machine learning techniques, with a regression model incorporating both low-order and high-order functional connectivity showing the best predictive capability.
