Beyond the Partnership Paradigm: Toward an Extended Typology of Government/Nonprofit Relationship Patterns

The study suggests that the relationship between nonprofits and governments in authoritarian regimes is more complex than a simple collaboration strategy, and researchers should be aware of the coexistence of different types of relationships and their varying impacts on different parts of the nonprofit sector.

How Hybrid Organizations Respond to Institutional Complexity: The Case of Norway

Summary: This article investigates how Norwegian social enterprises internally manage contradictory demands when externally engaging with multiple logics. The findings show that most institutional referents hold a public-sector logic, while social enterprises respond to conflicting demands through decoupling and selective coupling. Some social enterprises also rely on the structural responses of organizational compartmentalization. Compared to blended hybrids, structural hybrids experience less internal tension when managing institutional complexity.

Summary: Social enterprise and government interactions have become a significant topic in social entrepreneurship, especially in the case of South Korea where the government has been actively fostering social enterprises since 2007. This study examines the interorganizational network behavior of government-certified social enterprises in South Korea and finds that while a considerable number of these enterprises have diversified networks, the majority still operate as quasi-governmental implementers and do not actively engage in networking activities.

Forging a Local Social Economy: On the Institutional Work of Local Governments in South Korea

Summary: This study investigates strategies employed by local governments to stimulate the growth of the local social economy sector, which is associated with improving residents' subjective well-being. Using an institutionalist lens, the research examines how local governments can encourage the establishment of social economy organizations through institutional work, support, and public-sector entrepreneurship. Analyzing data from 69 South Korean urban metropolitan local governments between 2018 and 2020, the findings reveal a significant positive relationship between the support mechanisms implemented by local governments and the scale of the local social economy. The integration of public-sector entrepreneurship and institutional perspectives enriches existing literature and provides insights into strategic initiatives for fostering social entrepreneurship that local governments can adopt.

Hybridization in government-civil society organization relationships: An institutional logic perspective
