Case study reflections of an internet child abuse material offender informing the development of a proposed assessment instrument

Summary: The purpose of this study is to understand the differences between online and offline child abuse material offenders and improve assessment and treatment tools through a case study. The feedback from the interviewed offender provides unique insights and suggestions for further research. These reflections will be considered in the ongoing development and validation studies of the assessment and treatment tools to contribute to targeted assessment and risk-relevant treatment for internet child abuse material offenders.

Summary: Online child sexual abuse, known as CSAM, involves accessing, downloading, sharing, and creating images of child sexual abuse. The consumption of CSAM has increased dramatically, and the COVID-19 lockdowns have worsened the situation. CSAM offenders are more likely to be married and have children, but the harms experienced by their non-offending family members have been largely overlooked. Based on interviews with family members of CSAM offenders in the UK, we identify seven key elements characterizing the impacts of CSAM offending on non-offending family members and propose policy and practice responses to minimize these harms.

Female perpetrators of child sexual abuse in the United States

Summary: The purpose of this research is to examine the characteristics of female perpetrators of child sexual abuse using a large and contemporary dataset. The study found that female perpetrators constituted a lower percentage compared to male perpetrators, but the percentage varied significantly across states. Female perpetrators tended to victimize younger children and were more likely to victimize both male and female children. Additionally, female perpetrators were more likely to have a prior finding of maltreatment compared to male perpetrators.
