Expansion of Kuravirus-like Phage Sequences within the Past Decade, including Escherichia Phage YF01 from Japan, Prompt the Creation of Three New Genera

Steven Batinovic et al.

Summary: Bacteriophages, viruses that infect bacteria, have become a focus of attention due to the global antibiotic resistance crisis. The availability of sequencing technologies has led to the accumulation of phage sequence data. In this study, a new Escherichia phage, YF01, was isolated from a wastewater treatment plant in Japan. It was found to be similar to thirty-five Escherichia and Shigella phages, six of which were classified as Kuravirus by ICTV. The phylogenetic analysis suggests the need to expand and reshape the current Kuravirus genus and propose three additional genera for future phage classification.

Abolishment of morphology-based taxa and change to binomial species names: 2022 taxonomy update of the ICTV bacterial viruses subcommittee

Dann Turner et al.

Summary: This article summarizes the activities of the Bacterial Viruses Subcommittee of the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses from March 2021 to March 2022. It provides an overview of the new classifications proposed in 2021, approved by the Executive Committee, and ratified by vote in 2022. The taxonomy of bacterial viruses underwent significant changes, including the abolition of the paraphyletic morphological families Podoviridae, Siphoviridae, and Myoviridae, as well as the order Caudovirales, and the establishment of a binomial nomenclature system for species. Additionally, one order, 22 families, 30 subfamilies, 321 genera, and 862 species were newly created, promoted, or moved.

Summary: This study provides an experimental platform to quantify the abundance of plasmid-specific phages applicable to several different conjugal plasmid classes, and describes their distribution in wastewater systems. The comparison between influent and effluent of wastewater treatment plants revealed a reduction in phage concentration, which has important implications for water quality monitoring and ecological management of mobile resistance genes.

Indirect Selection against Antibiotic Resistance via Specialized Plasmid-Dependent Bacteriophages

Reetta Penttinen et al.

Summary: The utilization of plasmid-dependent bacteriophages has been found to be beneficial in controlling multi-drug resistant bacterial infections by causing bacteria to lose plasmids or making plasmids mutate so they cannot be transferred between pathogens. This approach has been recognized as a more acceptable choice that can act across different pathogens.
