A study on the synergetic effects of self/induced crystallization and nanoparticles on the mechanical properties of semi-crystalline polymer nanocomposites: experimental and analytical approaches

Saeideh Hojatzadeh et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of various factors on the mechanical properties of HDPE nanocomposites, including nanoparticle content, aggregation/agglomeration, polymer/particle interphase, and crystallinity. Different samples of HDPE nanocomposites were prepared with different percentages and types of silica nanoparticles. Characterization techniques such as FESEM and FTIR were used to analyze the nanoparticles, while DSC and XRD were utilized to determine the crystallinity and crystal size of the nanocomposites. Tensile testing was performed to understand the relationship between mechanical properties and nanoparticle loading and surface modification.

Effect of alkali treated groundnut shell powder in the basalt fiber reinforced polyethylene hybrid composites: A sustainable approach towards green composites

Piyush Kumar et al.

Summary: This study investigates the hybridizing effect of alkali-treated groundnut shell powder (T-GSP) on basalt fiber (BF) reinforced linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) composites at different weight fractions. The results show that adding 15 wt% T-GSP with 20 wt% fresh basalt fibers significantly improves the mechanical, thermal, and thermomechanical properties of the hybrid composites.

A spontaneous interfacial process to produce silica Janus nanosheets as perfect emulsifiers in pickering emulsions

Alireza Zamanian-Fard et al.

Summary: In this study, Janus nanosheets were synthesized at the oil/water interface through a spontaneous process, with the assistance of acidic/alkali catalysts. The solidification of melted paraffin trapped the formed nanosheets at the interface, allowing for their reuse. The unique structure of the Janus nanosheets, with amine groups on one side and ethoxy groups on the other side, makes them effective solid emulsifiers in Pickering emulsions.

Magnetic properties evolution and crystallization behaviour of vacuum- and air-long-term-annealed rapidly quenched Fe80.3Co5Cu0.7B14 alloy

L. Hawelek et al.

Summary: This work investigates the isothermal crystallization behaviour, crystal structure and magnetic properties evolution of long-term (up to 300 hours) low temperature (210 and 260℃) vacuum- and air-annealed Fe80.3Co5Cu0.7B14 alloy. The primary relaxation process before alpha-Fe(Co) phase crystallization has been identified. Annealing at 260℃ for 150 hours can fully initiate the crystallization process and improve magnetic properties. However, the long-term annealed alloy still exhibits higher core power losses compared to the classic annealing at 310℃.

An energy-based approach to study the aggregation/agglomeration phenomenon in polymer nanocomposites: Dispersion force against inter-particle cohesion

Esmail Sharifzadeh et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel method was proposed to predict the size and content of nanoparticle aggregates/agglomerates in polymer nanocomposites based on the characteristics of the mixer, cohesion energy, and content of nanoparticles. The predicted results were found to be very close to experimental results, validating the accuracy of the method.

Lorenzo Lisuzzo et al.

Summary: A novel material using MgO filled halloysite nanotubes has been developed for deacidification and protection of paper. The composite material effectively neutralizes the acidic degradation of paper, improves tensile strength, delays aging, and maintains the mechanical and visual properties of paper during the consolidation process.

Rheological and mechanical behavior of blend-based polymer nanocomposites containing Janus and non-Janus silica nanoparticles

Fiona Ader et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of Janus and non-Janus silica nanoparticles on the rheological and mechanical properties of blend-based polymer nanocomposites. It was found that Janus nanoparticles were effective in improving the processibility and mechanical properties of the blend, but aggregation effects were more significant in the case of Janus nanoparticles located at the polymer/polymer interface.

Synthesis of Janus/non-Janus hollow graphene oxide micro- and nanoparticles and the effects of their localization on the thermal conductivity of blend-based polymer composites

Elahe Pourakbar et al.

Summary: In this study, HO Janus (HOJ) micro- and nanoparticles were synthesized through buoyancy-induced desymmetrization process, and their effects on the thermal conductivity of binary polymer blends were investigated. The results showed that the presence of HO micro- and nanoparticles could increase the conduction coefficient of the blends, while their simultaneous presence in both phases had a significantly more impact on the thermal conductivity.

Summary: In this study, the viscosity and tensile modulus of polymer nanocomposites were evaluated using Arrhenius's equation and percolation theory. The model developed involved the effects of polymer/particles interphase region and aggregation/agglomeration of nanoparticles. The study also examined the simultaneous effects of nanoparticles content and temperature/frequency on the properties of the nanocomposites.

Enhancing mechanical properties of pure copper-based materials with CrxOy nanoparticles and CNT hybrid reinforcement

Xiangyang Chen et al.

Summary: In this study, a pure Cu matrix composite reinforced by CrxCyOy-CNT hybrid was prepared via powder metallurgy. Microstructural analysis showed that the formation of Cu2O nanoparticles at the interface contributed to interfacial bonding, and the 1.0 vol% hybrid reinforcement exhibited excellent ultimate strength compared to unreinforced Cu. Quantitative analysis indicated that Orowan looping system played a major role in strength contribution for CrxCyOy/Cu and CrxCyOy-CNT/Cu composites.
