Effect of Blending Ratio and Injection Timing on Combustion and Emissions of a Common-Rail Diesel Engine Fueled by Iso-Propanol-Butanol-Ethanol (IBE) and Conventional Diesel

Kudbettin Ilcin et al.

Summary: The combustion characteristics of IBE blends with diesel fuel were investigated in a CRDI engine. The results showed that IBE blends delayed combustion at low load, but this delay reduced with increasing load. The use of IBE blends increased cylinder gas pressure and rate of heat release. While there was no significant change in CO emissions, UHCs increased at low load conditions and reduced at high load. IBE blends reduced smoke opacity but increased NOx emissions. A decrease in injection advance lowered pressure and heat release rate, but gradually increased NOx emissions.
