Multimodal transportation network with cargo containerization technology: Advantages and challenges

Xuehao Feng et al.

Summary: This study investigates a bulk cargo distribution problem in a multimodal transportation network considering both the transportation modes of inland waterways and containerization technology. A mixed-integer linear programming model is developed to optimize transportation mode selection, vehicle routing, depot selection, and cargo quantity for containerization. Numerical experiments based on the Yangtze River network show that containerization transportation can decrease total transportation costs. The study provides insight into the decision making of logistics companies and government policymaking.

Study of the Multimodal Freight Transport Sector in Romania: Analysis of the External and Internal Environment

Desdemona Isabela Scarisoreanu et al.

Summary: This paper examines the current situation of the multimodal freight transport sector in Romania by analyzing its external and internal environment. The goal is to identify the strengths and weaknesses of this sector and determine the strategies needed to achieve the targets set by the European Green Deal. The EU emphasizes the importance of multimodal transport, particularly rail transport, in reducing pollution. Despite challenges such as the aging workforce in the railway sector and a labor shortage in road transport, the multimodal freight transport market in Romania remains attractive. To ensure a competitive advantage, a strategy focusing on stimulating rail freight transport and reducing pollution needs to be implemented.
