Khushboo Kumari et al.

Summary: This work proposes reducing the capacitor size of a conventional three-phase neutral point clamped (NPC) inverter-based solar photovoltaic (PV) system by using a metallized polypropylene film dc bus capacitor. This improves the system's reliability, reduces cost, and increases its life expectancy. The unbalance in capacitor voltage is identified and resolved using a modified modulation strategy. The system's performance is verified through simulation and experimental results.

Adaptive Second-Order Sliding Mode Control for Grid-Connected NPC Converters With Enhanced Disturbance Rejection

Xiaoning Shen et al.

Summary: In this article, a two-stage control scheme consisting of an adaptive-gain second-order sliding mode (SOSM) controller and a switched high-gain observer (HGO) is proposed for the three-level neutral-point-clamped (NPC) converter. The proposed approach provides faster dynamic response and better steady-state response for the NPC converter compared to the fixed-gain SOSM. By combining the switched HGO with the adaptive-gain SOSM controller, the adverse effects of measurement noise in the power system are greatly reduced. The experiments validate the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Disturbance Observer-Based Finite-Time Control for Three-Phase AC-DC Converter

Cheng Fu et al.

Summary: In this article, disturbance observer-based finite-time control (DOFTC) is proposed to address the issue of large fluctuations of the dc-link voltage and system instability in three-phase ac-dc converters. A finite-time disturbance observer is designed to estimate disturbances accurately and quickly. The stability of the ac-dc converter closed-loop system is analyzed and theoretically proven. Experimental results validate the effectiveness of the DOFTC strategy, achieving good dynamic and steady-state performance under load disturbance and parameter uncertainties.

A Carrier-Based Common-Mode Voltage Elimination Method for Back-to-Back Three-Level NPC Converters

Xiaona Xu et al.

Summary: A CMV elimination method based on pulse-width modulation pulse alignment for back-to-back three-level NPC converter is proposed in this paper to address the urgent problem of high-amplitude and high-frequency common-mode voltage. On this basis, a neutral-point potential balance method based on zero-sequence voltage is also introduced. By injecting the same optimal zero-sequence voltage into both the rectifier and inverter sides, the coupling between CMV elimination and neutral-point potential balance is avoided.

Reduction of the Circulating Current Among Parallel NPC Inverters

Anatolii Tcai et al.

Summary: In medium/high power applications, three-level neutral-point-clamped (NPC) inverters are a reliable solution providing high efficiency and low harmonic distortion. However, in parallel NPCs, high-frequency zero-sequence circulating currents (HF-ZSCC) may occur, leading to increased power losses. While HF-ZSCC has little impact on two-level inverters for low voltage grids and traction applications, more sophisticated methods can be applied to reduce HF-ZSCC in NPCs.
