Mechanical and radiation shielding features of lithium titanophosphate glasses doped BaO

Kh S. Shaaban et al.

Summary: Glasses with different BaO content in the formulation 15TiO2-70P2O5-(15-x)Li2O-xBaO (0 < x < 10 mol. %) were fabricated using the melt quenching procedure. The density of the glasses increased and the molar volume decreased with increasing BaO concentration. Ultrasonic velocities (VL & VT) increased as the amount of BaO content increased, indicating higher elastic properties. BaO content was found to be the only factor affecting the radiation shielding phenomenon in the glasses. BaO reinforcement not only increased the density of the glass compositions, but also enhanced their mechanical and gamma-ray shielding properties.
