Assessment and Exploitation of the Minimum Current Harmonic Distortion Under Overmodulation in Five-Phase Induction Motor Drives

Martin Medina-Sanchez et al.

Summary: This article compares different overmodulation (OVM) techniques for five-phase induction motor drives, focusing on their ability to minimize current distortion (THD). Two minimum current distortion (MCD) OVM approaches are proposed as benchmarks, which prioritize minimizing harmonic stator copper loss (HSCL) to reduce current THD. The findings reveal the effectiveness of MCD methods in reducing current THD, HSCL, peak current, and average switching losses, especially for machines with negligible third-order space harmonic. Real-time implementation indications for MCD solutions are also provided.

Four-Degree-of-Freedom Overmodulation Strategy for Five-Phase Space Vector Pulsewidth Modulation

Feifei Bu et al.

Summary: This article introduces a four-degree-of-freedom overmodulation strategy for five-phase space vector pulsewidth modulation (SVPWM) to reduce low-order harmonics in the output voltage. By controlling the third harmonic, the strategy aims to simultaneously control basic voltage vectors of the fundamental wave and the third harmonic subspace, effectively decreasing low-order harmonic content without sacrificing control degrees of freedom. Simulation and experimental results show that this strategy improves dc bus voltage utilization, allows for four control degrees of freedom in managing the third harmonic, and reduces low-order harmonics in the output voltage.
