MicroRNAs, small regulatory elements with significant effects on human implantation: a review

Elham Azizi et al.

Summary: Embryo implantation is a critical process that requires synchronized interaction between the blastocyst and a receptive endometrium. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) play important roles in regulating genes involved in the implantation process and their dysregulation can lead to implantation disorders. MiRNAs can also be used as non-invasive diagnostic biomarkers in body fluids and blood for different pathological and physiological conditions. Recent studies have focused on the role of intracellular and extracellular miRNAs in human implantation and their influence on implantation disorders, highlighting their potential as biomarkers.

Recurrent implantation failure: A comprehensive summary from etiology to treatment

Junying Ma et al.

Summary: Recurrent implantation failure (RIF) is a common problem in couples undergoing in vitro fertilization and embryo transfer. The lack of widely accepted definitions and treatment protocols hampers the progress in predicting and preventing RIF. The possible causes of RIF include immunology, thrombophilias, endometrial receptivity, microbiome, anatomical abnormalities, male factors, and embryo aneuploidy. Individualized treatment aimed at addressing the primary cause is crucial in increasing the implantation rate.

Novel polymorphism of IFI44L associated with the susceptibility and clinical characteristics of systemic lupus erythematosus in a Chinese population

Qing Zhang et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the association between IFI44L rs273259 polymorphism and the susceptibility and clinical characteristics of Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) in a Chinese population. The results showed significant differences in the genotype and allele frequencies of IFI44L rs273259 between SLE patients and healthy controls. IFI44L rs273259 polymorphism was associated with clinical characteristics of SLE including malar rash, discoid rash, lupus nephritis, and anti-Smith antibodies.

Immunomodulation for unexplained recurrent implantation failure: where are we now?

Genevieve Genest et al.

Summary: Immune dysfunction can cause recurrent implantation failure. This article evaluates the immune responses during implantation and the effectiveness of immunomodulatory therapies. Recurrent implantation failure (RIF) is defined as the failure to achieve pregnancy after transferring at least 3 good-quality embryos, and its cause is unexplained in 50% of cases. Currently, there are no effective treatments for unexplained RIF. Modulating the maternal immune response during implantation is a recent strategy to improve conception rates in RIF patients, but there are no confirmed diagnostic tests for immune-mediated RIF.

Association of Polymorphisms in FSHR, INHA, ESR1, and BMP15 with Recurrent Implantation Failure

Eun-Ju Ko et al.

Summary: Recurrent implantation failure (RIF) refers to multiple unsuccessful in vitro fertilization embryo transfers in the same individual. Genetic factors, including SNPs in FSHR, INHA, ESR1, and BMP15, have been found to be associated with RIF development in Korean women.

LncRNA LINC01123 promotes malignancy of ovarian cancer by targeting hsa-miR-516b-5p/VEGFA

Bing Dong et al.

Summary: The study aimed to determine the role of lncRNA LINC01123 in ovarian cancer (OC) bio-progression. It was found that LINC01123 was upregulated in OC cell lines and its silencing suppressed cell proliferation and metastasis while promoting apoptosis. Additionally, hsa-miR-516b-5p was linked to LINC01123 and VEGFA was downstream of hsa-miR-516b-5p. These findings suggest that LINC01123 promotes OC development by dampening miR-516b-5p function.

Genetic Association between Inflammatory-Related Polymorphism in STAT3, IL-1 beta, IL-6, TNF-a and Idiopathic Recurrent Implantation Failure

Min Jung Kwon et al.

Summary: Recurrent implantation failure (RIF) refers to the inability to achieve pregnancy after multiple embryo transfers. In this Korean study, the association between certain genetic variations (STAT3 rs1053004, IL-1 beta rs16944, IL-6 rs1800796, and TNF-alpha rs1800629, 1800630) and RIF prevalence was analyzed. The results showed a significant association between STAT3 rs1053004, IL-6 rs1800796, TNF-alpha rs1800629, and RIF prevalence, providing new insights into the role of inflammation in RIF.

Ji-Hyang Kim et al.

Summary: The study found an association between MUC4 gene polymorphisms and RPL, particularly the rs882605 C>A and rs1104760 A>G polymorphisms. These findings suggest that MUC4 polymorphisms may serve as potential biomarkers for RPL.

The Inflammatory Cytokine Imbalance for Miscarriage, Pregnancy Loss and COVID-19 Pneumonia

Fortunato Vesce et al.

Summary: Pregnancy is a vascular event controlled by endocrine factors. During pregnancy, the chorionic villi penetrate the uterine spiral arteries to provide nutrients and oxygen for fetal growth. Vascular function is regulated by prostaglandins and thromboxane for vasoconstriction, and prostacyclin for vasodilation. The fetus can alter the maternal immune response to protect itself. Inflammation is a leading cause of pregnancy-related complications. In both COVID-19 pneumonia and gestational inflammation, preventing and counteracting inflammation is crucial.

Down-regulation of the tumor suppressor miR-34a contributes to head and neck cancer by up-regulating the MET oncogene and modulating tumor immune evasion

Summary: miR-34a directly targets MET and acts as a tumor suppressor in HNSCC by inhibiting HNSCC cell proliferation. Administration of LNA-miR-34a reduces HNSCC cell proliferation and tumor burden, suppresses immunosuppressive effects in the tumor microenvironment, and increases the frequency of Th1 cells and CD8 naive T cells in HNSCC patient samples.

Mechanism of miR-218-5p in autophagy, apoptosis and oxidative stress in rheumatoid arthritis synovial fibroblasts is mediated by KLF9 and JAK/STAT3 pathways

Summary: The study reveals that miR-218-5p regulates proliferation, apoptosis, autophagy, and oxidative stress in rheumatoid arthritis synovial fibroblasts by targeting KLF9 and the JAK2/STAT3 signaling pathway. Knockdown of miR-218-5p may provide a potential therapeutic target for understanding the mechanism of RA.
