The factors associated with cognitive function among community-dwelling older adults in Taiwan

You-Chen Mary Lor et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the associations between anthropometric measurements, physiological parameters, chronic disease comorbidities, and social and lifestyle factors with cognitive function in community-dwelling older adults in Taiwan. The results showed that age, gender, diabetes, hyperlipidemia, exercise, albumin, and high-density lipoprotein level were related to cognitive function. Waistline, alcohol intake in recent six months, and hemoglobin were not significantly associated with cognitive function.

Physical and cognitive function to explain the quality of life among older adults with cognitive impairment: exploring cognitive function as a mediator

Song Rhayun et al.

Summary: This study aimed to identify the direct and indirect effects of physical and cognitive function on the quality of life in older adults with mild cognitive impairment. The results showed that physical and cognitive function explained variations in both physical and mental components of quality of life. Balance had significant indirect effects on the physical component of quality of life through cognitive function as a mediator. Therefore, strategies that focus on both physical function and the mediating role of cognitive function are important in improving the quality of life in this population.

Altruism, Volunteering and Cognitive Performance Among Older Adults: A 2-Year Longitudinal Study

Jimilly Caputo Correa et al.

Summary: This study investigates the association between altruism, volunteering, and cognitive functioning in community-dwelling older adults. The results show that altruism is associated with higher scores on cognitive tests at baseline, while volunteering is associated with better verbal fluency and word recall after 2 years of follow-up. Altruism is linked to higher absolute scores on the tests, while volunteering is associated with lower cognitive decline. These findings provide insights into the emerging field of research on older adult health.

Associations between volunteering and cognitive impairment: The moderating role of race/ethnicity

Yi Wang et al.

Summary: This study examines the associations between formal and informal volunteering and older adults' objective and subjective cognition, and explores the moderating role of race/ethnicity in these associations. The findings suggest that more years of formal and informal volunteering significantly reduce the odds of objective cognitive impairment, but have no significant impact on subjective cognitive impairment. The relationship between informal volunteering and objective cognition varies by race/ethnicity.
