SERS on semiconductor substrates receives an electromagnetic boost

Laura Fabris

Summary: Boosting electromagnetic enhancement in semiconductor substrates is crucial for making surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) a commercially viable technique. Previous efforts had difficulties achieving this and detecting non-chemisorbing analytes like volatile organic compounds (VOCs) using these materials. In this article published in Chem, Liu, Ye, Xiang, et al. have finally reached this milestone by synthesizing ZnO@ZIF-8 nanostructures.

The role of oxygen vacancies in TT-Nb2O5 nanoparticles for the photoconversion of glycerol into solketal

Gustavo H. M. Gomes et al.

Summary: Defect engineering of Nb2O5 nanoparticles is a feasible approach to enhance photocatalytic performance. Line defects and single-electron-trapped oxygen vacancies were introduced into TTNb2O5 nanoparticles synthesized by the Pechini method followed by calcination. The presence of mesoporous structure and varying concentrations of SETOVs in the nanoparticles significantly improved their photocatalytic activity.

3 nm-Wide WO3-x Nanorods with Abundant Oxygen Vacancies as Substrates for High-Sensitivity SERS Detection

Zhiming Sun et al.

Summary: Oxygen vacancy (V-o) engineering is a powerful tool to enhance the surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) activity of semiconductor metal oxide-based substrates. In this study, ultrafine WO3-x nanorods were prepared using a solvothermal method, resulting in high-performance SERS substrates. The detection limit of the rhodamine 6G (R6G) molecule on the Vo substrate was significantly improved compared to unmodified WO3, thanks to the V-o-induced localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR), diverse vibronic coupling, and enhanced charge transfer. These findings provide insights for the rational design of oxygen vacancy tailored semiconductor SERS substrates.
