Mechanisms of polystyrene microplastic degradation by the microbially driven Fenton reaction

Yuting Yang et al.

Summary: The microbial-driven Fenton reaction can enhance the degradation of polystyrene microplastics (PS-MPs) through the production of hydroxyl radicals, but it also causes damage to microorganisms. This study demonstrates that PS-MPs can be continuously degraded by microbial-driven Fenton reactions in natural alternating anaerobic-aerobic environments, even with the oxidative damage on microorganisms.

Catalytic oxidation of polystyrene to aromatic oxygenates over a graphitic carbon nitride catalyst

Ruochen Cao et al.

Summary: The increasing manufacturing and the difficulty of plastic recycling have caused a significant amount of plastic waste. Current chemical recycling and upcycling methods have limitations including harsh conditions and poor selectivity. In this study, a photocatalytic method using heterogeneous graphitic carbon nitride catalysts is demonstrated to oxidize polystyrene into aromatic oxygenates under visible light. The dominant products are benzoic acid, acetophenone, and benzaldehyde when the polystyrene conversion exceeds 90% at 150 degrees C. The reaction mechanism involves the activation of polystyrene, followed by bond oxidation and further oxidation processes to form aromatic oxygenates. The development of materials capable of plastic recycling and upcycling is of great significance. The authors report a novel heterogeneous carbon nitride photocatalyst that efficiently converts polystyrene plastics into aromatic oxygenates, such as benzoic acid.

Photocatalytic Dissolution of Precious Metals by TiO2 through Photogenerated Free Radicals

Yao Chen et al.

Summary: This study systematically investigates the selectivity and solvation effects observed in the photocatalytic dissolution of precious metals. The radicals generated in photocatalysis are found to be the key active species in the reaction. The presence of cyano functional group in the solvent drives the dissolution of gold, while chlorine radicals are crucial for the dissolution of platinum group precious metals. The catalytic properties of different precious metals result in selective dissolution by promoting different transformations of functional groups.
