Investigating slow-moving shallow soil landslides using Sentinel-1 InSAR data in Gisborne, New Zealand

Matthew E. Cook et al.

Summary: This study utilizes InSAR processing and other observational data to reveal the deformation of the steep terrain surrounding Gisborne in the North Island of New Zealand. The results indicate that 132 unstable slopes were caused by soil creep and earthflows triggered by heavy rainfall, and the deformation also shows a seasonal variation correlated with rainfall.

Tri-decadal evolution of land subsidence in the Beijing Plain revealed by multi-epoch satellite InSAR observations

Jie Dong et al.

Summary: Persistent land subsidence induced by groundwater exploitation in the Beijing Plain has caused significant damages to buildings and infrastructure. This study used multi-sensor C-band InSAR measurements to retrieve land subsidence measurements over the past three decades. The results showed three major subsidence areas surrounding downtown Beijing, with the maximum vertical displacement of 1.98 m in the Chaoyang District. The land subsidence has decelerated since 2016 and is now almost stagnant, while land uplift has been observed in other districts.

Enhanced Kinematic Inversion of 3-D Displacements, Geometry, and Hydraulic Properties of a North-South Slow-Moving Landslide in Three Gorges Reservoir

Wanji Zheng et al.

Summary: Complete and accurate estimation of three-dimensional (3-D) deformations for landslides is challenging, especially for slopes facing north or south. In this study, a topography-constrained strain model is proposed to derive complete 3-D movements by exploiting the spatial relationship of 3-D deformations between neighboring points and assuming surface parallel flow of landslides. The method is tested on both synthetic and real datasets, and the performance of various datasets and the potential of NISAR in deriving time series and 3-D movements are assessed.

Characterization of elastoplastic behavior and retrieval of active zone depth for expansive soil slopes in the middle-route channel head of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project, China, using InSAR time series

Ziyuan Li et al.

Summary: In this study, radar data was used to observe and analyze the behavior of expansive soil in the South-to-North Water Diversion Project in China. The results showed that soil deformation caused significant damage to the infrastructure, and a new deformation model was proposed to accurately interpret the nonlinear behavior of the soil. The study also found that soil deformation was closely related to factors such as groundwater level and temperature, providing important insights for preventing expansive soil hazards and implementing preventive measures.

Deformation Evaluation of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project (SNWDP) Central Route over Handan in Hebei, China, Based on Sentinel-1A, Radarsat-2, and TerraSAR-X Datasets

Siting Xiong et al.

Summary: The South-to-North Water Diversion Project (SNWDP) is a megaproject aimed at balancing the distribution of water resources between northern and southern China. This study investigates the capability of Multitemporal interferometric synthetic aperture radar (MT-InSAR) in monitoring the deformation of the canal and ancillary facilities along the central route (CR) of the SNWDP in Handan, Hebei Province, China. The results show that the western embankment of the open canal is subsiding at a rate of up to 10 mm/year.

Surface Deformation of Expansive Soil at Ankang Airport, China, Revealed by InSAR Observations

Shuangcheng Zhang et al.

Summary: This study used remote sensing technology to detect the surface deformation of Ankang Airport over a certain period of time. It found that the filling area exhibited obvious unstable deformation, mainly caused by the consolidation and settlement of the fill layer and the expansion and shrinkage of the expansive soil.

The cyclic expansion and contraction characteristics of a loess slope and implications for slope stability

Hengxing Lan et al.

Summary: Loess, covering approximately 6.6% of China, forms thick deposits in the northern and northwestern parts of the country, susceptible to slope instability due to natural erosional processes and human modification. Monitoring of a loess slope near Yan'an city in Shanxi Province revealed cyclic deformation, potentially caused by thermal and moisture fluctuations. Physical models based on soil temperature and moisture measurements suggest that recoverable cyclic deformations indicate elastic stress within the loess, while non-recoverable deformations may lead to material damage and instability. A quantitative relationship between weather cycles and thermal deformation was developed, predicting additional expansion of the loess slope in response to projected temperature increases.

Accuracy of a Model-Free Algorithm for Temporal InSAR Tropospheric Correction

Howard Zebker

Summary: In this study, an evaluation of tropospheric artifacts in InSAR time series is presented, along with a new correction algorithm that requires only InSAR data. The algorithm shows a reduction in errors comparable or superior to many weather model-based methods, without the necessity of accessing fine-scale atmosphere parameters globally.

Coherence-guided InSAR deformation analysis in the presence of ongoing land surface changes in the Imperial Valley, California

Junle Jiang et al.

Summary: Despite improvements in the quality and availability of InSAR data, analyzing and interpreting InSAR data in regions with extensive agricultural activities remains challenging. This study used Sentinel-1 satellite imagery to investigate the impact of land surface changes on InSAR time series in an area of California over a 4-year period. By examining the temporal variability of data quality and applying various processing steps, the study aimed to better distinguish signals associated with different surface conditions.

Interpreting the influence of rainfall and reservoir water level on a large-scale expansive soil landslide in the Danjiangkou Reservoir region, China

Zhenwei Dai et al.

Summary: Expansive soils are widely distributed in the Danjiangkou Reservoir region in China, and reservoir-related expansive soil landslides have become a serious issue with the rise in reservoir water level. This study conducted a detailed analysis on the Jingang landslide, a large-scale expansive soil landslide triggered by reservoir operation, to understand its movement characteristics under the influence of rainfall and reservoir water level. The data suggest that both seasonal rainfall and reservoir water level variation play important roles in causing ground movement of the landslide.

Multi-scale deformation monitoring with Sentinel-1 InSAR analyses along the Middle Route of the South-North Water Diversion Project in China

Jie Dong et al.

Summary: InSAR analysis of the Middle Route canal of the South-North Water Diversion Project showed overall stability, with some sections experiencing significant embankment deformation or land subsidence, particularly in high-filled sections. Additionally, severe uneven land subsidence along the Tianjin Branch Route was identified as a significant threat to the long-term safety of local water transfer operations.
