Magnetism of pseudohalide Ni(II) complexes containing 4-methylpyridine ligands

Terezia Laluhova et al.

Summary: Two hexacoordinate Ni(II) complexes formed by methylpyridine ligands and pseudohalido coligands have been successfully synthesized and characterized. X-ray structure analysis reveals that the coordination polyhedron exhibits a compressed tetragonal bipyramid geometry. Magnetometric measurements confirm that the axial zero-field splitting parameter D has small negative values. This finding is supported by the Generalized Crystal-Field Theory and analyzed through ab initio CASSCF + NEVPT2 calculations. The magnetic parameters have been compared with complexes of similar architecture.

Excitonic transverse and amplitude fluctuations in noncollinear and charge-ordered RbFe2+Fe3+F6

H. Lane et al.

Summary: RbFe(2+)Fe(3+)F(6) is an example of an antiferromagnet with charge ordering, where orbital degeneracy and noncollinear spin arrangements introduce the possibility for unusual excitations. Through a multilevel analysis of neutron spectroscopy data, the broadened continuum scattering observed may be due to amplitude fluctuations allowed by the presence of an orbital degree of freedom on the Fe(2+) site. This study extends spin-orbit exciton models to understand low-energy excitations and predict possible amplitude mode scattering in RbFe2+Fe3+F6.
