Thermodynamic behavior of bioactive glass in relationship with high fluorine content

Amina Gharbi et al.

Summary: This study synthesized bioactive fluorosilicate glasses (BaG-Fx) through melting method to increase the fluoride content in derived Hench bioactive glass (BaG). Different physico-chemical analyses were conducted to characterize the glasses. The addition of calcium fluoride (CaF2) induced significant physico-chemical changes, as proven by X-ray diffraction and infrared spectroscopy. The morphological changes of the glass powders were observed with the increase of CaF2 content, and the thermal analysis demonstrated the impact of fluoride ions on the structural dynamics and thermodynamic properties of the glasses.

Structural, optical, and cytotoxicity studies of laser irradiated ZnO doped borate bioactive glasses

Ahmed R. Ghazy et al.

Summary: Borate glasses doped with different amounts of ZnO were characterized using various techniques and found to have an amorphous structure and a prominent absorption band at 261.5 nm with an energy gap of approximately 3.5 eV. The doped glass also showed better cell viability and low toxicity, indicating its potential for biomedical applications.

New formulation calcium-based 45S5 bioactive glass: In vitro assessment in PBS solution for potential dental applications

Zhi Wei Loh et al.

Summary: This study designed a bioactive glass using waste to improve mechanical properties while maintaining bioactivity performance in vitro. The novel bioactive glasses were prepared using the melt-quenching approach and their bioactivity characteristics were evaluated using phosphate buffer saline as an immersion medium. The results showed that sample 0F had a carbonate apatite phase, while sample 3F had a fluorapatite and calcite phase, supported by the FTIR spectra. The pH also increased for both samples, indicating their bioactivity. Additionally, sample 3F exhibited higher hardness and toughness, supported by the weight gained in the biodegradability analysis. This work offers a promising technique to fabricate bioactive glass incorporating waste for potential dental applications.

Effect of CaF2/P2O5 ratios on physical and mechanical properties of novel CaO-Na2O-B2O3-SiO2 glasses

Zhi Wei Loh et al.

Summary: This paper outlines the fabrication of bioactive glass derived from waste eggshells as a source of calcium and investigates its properties. The results show that increasing CaF2 content with appropriate P2O5 content can improve the mechanical properties of the bioglass. The bioglass with CaF2/P2O5 ratio of 6/4 exhibits the optimal compressive strength and vickers microhardness.

Summary: A powder metallurgy process was used to produce high temperature self-lubricating composites based on Ni, and the wear properties were investigated using pin-on-disc test and characterization techniques. The results showed that the addition of solid lubricant particles decreased the coefficient of friction and improved the tribological properties.

Bioactive antibacterial borate glass and glass-ceramics

Gleison Lopes da Silva et al.

Summary: This study investigates the properties of bioactive glass-ceramics obtained through controlled crystallization with different heat treatment times. The results show that the crystallinity and crystallite size increase with longer heat treatment, leading to enhanced bioactivity and higher ion exchange rate. The glass-ceramics also exhibit antibacterial activity against E. coli. These findings suggest that bioactive glass-ceramics have potential applications as biomaterials for treating bone fractures.

Summary: By incorporating K2O into the glass, the dissolution rate was increased and ion release occurred through a diffusion-controlled process. The BL50-implanted group showed higher serum ALP activity, OCN level, and newly formed bone compared to BN100 and BK50 at 3 weeks and 6 weeks post-surgery. Implantation of all glass samples in the femoral bone defect did not impact liver and kidney functions.

Summary: This study successfully prepared borate glasses doped with silver, which showed improved bioactivity and excellent antibacterial properties. The addition of silver enhanced the alkalinity of the glasses in simulated body fluid and led to the formation of hydroxyapatite and fluorapatite phases. Antibacterial tests demonstrated the efficiency of silver-doped borate glasses against both gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria.

Influence of CaO on the structure of zinc sodium tetra borate glasses containing Cu2+ ions

G. Sangeetha et al.

Summary: A study on sodium tetra borate glasses doped with Cu2+ ions showed a decrease in density values with composition, revealing conversion of BO4 to BO3 units. EPR spectra analysis confirmed tetragonally distorted Cu2+ ions in octahedral sites, and N4 values from FTIR spectra supported the conversion of BO4 to BO3 units.
