Kinetics of intermetallic compound layers between AISI 321 stainless steel and molten aluminum

Huan He et al.

Summary: The influence of reaction temperature and time on the interfacial intermetallic compounds (IMCs) in hot dip aluminizing of AISI 321 stainless steel was investigated. The results showed that at 700 degrees C, only a single layer of θ-Fe4Al13 was observed, while at 800-1000 degrees C, the IMCs consisted of an inner layer of η-Fe2Al5 +ζ-FeAl2 adjacent to the steel and a thick outer layer of θ-Fe4Al13 close to the aluminum. The thickness of the inner layer increased with increasing dipping temperature and time, while the thickness of the outer layer varied at different temperatures. Rating: 8 points

Growth twinning and morphology of Al45Cr7 and Al13Fe4

Y. Cui et al.

Summary: The study investigates how different twin types and twin variants affect the growth morphology during solidification in primary Al45Cr7 and Al13Fe4 intermetallic compounds (IMCs). The number of twin variants increased with cooling rate, and cyclic twinning resulted in different growth morphologies depending on the twin variants present.

Change in microstructural characteristics of laser powder b e d fuse d Al-Fe binary alloy at elevated temperature

Xing Qi et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated that the microstructural morphologies of the Al-2.5 wt% Fe alloy undergo a sluggish change, dominated by the solid solution of Fe element and the Orowan strengthening mechanism by fine Al-Fe intermetallics. The high strength level of the alloy is sustained even after long-term exposure to 300 degrees C, with no significant grain growth in the α-Al matrix.
