Travel attitudes, the built environment and travel behavior relationships: Causal insights from social psychology theories

Mashrur Rahman et al.

Summary: This paper explores the relationship between the built environment and travel behavior, focusing on the importance of travel attitudes and residential choice. The research finds that there are interactive effects between travel attitudes and the built environment, and the built environment can indirectly influence travel behavior by triggering attitude changes and inducing routine behavior or habits. Additionally, residential preferences can be influenced by personal experiences and lifestyle choices, as well as the supply, availability, and composition of the built environment.

Modeling dynamics in household car ownership over life courses: a latent class competing risks model

Gaofeng Gu et al.

Summary: This study introduces a latent class competing risks model to analyze the impact of socio-demographics and life events on car transaction behavior, revealing significant heterogeneity in household car ownership decisions. Different households display varied sensitivity to life events based on their classification.

Do changes in the residential location lead to changes in travel attitudes? A structural equation modeling approach

Summary: Numerous studies have found that changes in the residential environment can influence attitudes towards specific travel modes, especially public transport and active travel. These effects are partly mediated by changes in travel mode frequency.

Work-trip mode choice in Germany - Affected by individual constraints or by partner interaction?

Bhuvanachithra Chidambaram et al.

Summary: The study found that for respondents without young children, spatial and temporal fixity attributes strongly predict men's (also women's) driving, whereas in market/non-market sectors, partner attributes significantly decrease men's driving. For respondents with young children, an increase in personal income positively and significantly predicts women's (also men's) driving, whereas high levels of education, an increase in household income, and partners' time spent on unpaid work strongly decrease women's driving. Men or women with more egalitarian or reverse working hours preferences are more likely to use sustainable modes for both groups.

Exploring the relationship between life events, mode preferences and mode use of young adults: A 3-year cross-lagged panel analysis in the Netherlands

Marie-Jose Olde Kalter et al.

Summary: This study examined the impact of life events on transport mode preferences and frequency of use among young adults in the Netherlands. The results showed that life events significantly influence mode preferences and frequency of use, with changes in frequency of use having a stronger effect on changes in mode preferences.

Relating latent class membership to external variables: An overview

Zsuzsa Bakk et al.

Summary: This article provides an overview of existing approaches for relating latent class membership to external variables of interest, building on the work of Nylund-Gibson et al. It summarizes models with distal outcomes and recommended modeling options for models with covariates and multiple latent variables. The article also demonstrates modeling approaches using data from the General Social Survey and discusses software availability.

When nudges aren't enough: Norms, incentives and habit formation in public transport usage

Christina Gravert et al.

Summary: The study found that descriptive social norms have little impact on public transport usage, but increasing economic incentives can significantly boost ridership and long-term usage. The effect is mainly driven by initial low users, indicating habit formation and highlighting the heterogeneous effects of the policy.
