Wild animal densities as predictors of cattle disease risks and breed types in southwestern Uganda

Nina Pius Mbuya et al.

Summary: This study investigated the spatial distribution of wild ungulates that pastoralist communities perceive as culprits in the transmission of cattle diseases outside protected areas in southwestern Uganda. The study found an inverse association between the population of wild animals and the cost of cattle disease control.

Would Climate Change Influence the Potential Distribution and Ecological Niche of Bluetongue Virus and Its Main Vector in Peru?

Dennis Navarro A. Mamani et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the potential distribution and ecological niche of bluetongue virus (BTV) and Culicoides insignis in Peru under different climate scenarios. The findings showed that the risk of BTV would decrease, while the distribution and stability of its vector would increase due to climate change. The current and future climate scenarios revealed high overlap of the ecological niches of BTV and its vector.

Working with GNSS collar data. The importance of pre-analysis when setting the sampling interval

Pilar Fernandez-Rodriguez et al.

Summary: The use of tracking collars with GPS allows for complex analyses of animal movement and space use. This study evaluated the effects of different fix intervals on ecological variables used to describe behavior, movement, home range, and habitat use. The results suggest that caution should be taken when programming collars, as different sampling intervals can lead to significant differences in trajectory and other movement descriptors. A fixing interval of 30 minutes was found to be optimal for estimation of path length and home range, balancing high-resolution data with battery life.

Application of GPS occurrence data to understand African white-backed vultures Gyps africanus spatial home range overlaps

Mark Zvidzai et al.

Summary: Understanding the spatial home range overlap zones of critically endangered African white-backed vultures is important for conservation planning. This study used high-resolution GPS technology and analytical algorithms to estimate and delineate these overlap zones. Results showed low home range overlap among the vultures, with some individuals having fixed ranges within Hwange National Park. The overlap zones were concentrated within the protected area of the park.

Genomic Characterization of Endemic and Ecdemic Non-typhoidal Salmonella enterica Lineages Circulating Among Animals and Animal Products in South Africa

Laura M. Carroll et al.

Summary: This study characterized 63 Salmonella enterica strains isolated from livestock, companion animals, wildlife, and animal products in South Africa using WGS, revealing diverse serotypes and sequence types, as well as multiple antibiotic-resistant subtypes. The characterization of animal-related Salmonella strains in South Africa provides critical insights into a region with a high burden of salmonellosis.

Emerging and Re-emerging Vector-Borne Infectious Diseases and the Challenges for Control: A Review

Bayissa Chala et al.

Summary: Vector-borne emerging and re-emerging diseases pose significant public health challenges globally. Interactions among pathogens, hosts, environment, and social demographic factors are key to the emergence and re-emergence of these diseases. Ongoing evolution of pathogens, population growth, urbanization, and climate change are among the factors linked with the appearance and resurgence of vector-borne infectious diseases.

Mammals, wildlife trade, and the next global pandemic

K. Nagaraju Shivaprakash et al.

Summary: Most new infectious diseases emerge when pathogens transfer from animals to humans. The risk of carrying zoonotic diseases is not equal for all mammal species in wildlife trade, and mitigation measures should prioritize species with the highest risk of carrying zoonotic viruses. Curbing the sales of wildlife products and developing principles that support sustainable and healthy wildlife trade could help prevent future zoonotic outbreaks.

Understanding potential implications for non-trophic parasite transmission based on vertebrate behavior at mesocarnivore carcass sites

Moises Gonzalvez et al.

Summary: Research suggests that scavenging animals, especially wild canids, mustelids and viverrids, exhibit more rubbing behavior at carcass sites, indicating a higher potential infection risk. Red foxes are the species that most frequently contact and mark carcasses, with a preference for contacting heterospecific carcasses.

Repository Approaches to Improving the Quality of Shared Data and Code

Ana Trisovic et al.

Summary: Sharing data and code for reuse is crucial in scientific work, but the usability and reproducibility of shared data and code may be lacking. Data repository features and services are essential for improving the quality, longevity, and reusability of datasets. Techniques such as data curation, computational reproducibility, and gamified design elements can indicate and enhance the quality of shared data and code to benefit data repositories and research dissemination platforms.
