Improving the interpretation of standardized precipitation index estimates to capture drought characteristics in changing climate conditions

Gabriel Constantino Blain et al.

Summary: A four-step algorithm was developed in this study to improve the interpretation of standardized precipitation index (SPI) values under changing climate conditions. By detecting trends in rainfall quantities and quantifying their effect on the probability of a particular SPI value occurring, this algorithm enhanced the understanding of SPI values and their expected frequencies.

Adjustment of the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) for the Evaluation of Drought in the Arroyo Pechelin Basin, Colombia, under Zero Monthly Precipitation Conditions

Luis Jose Cerpa Reyes et al.

Summary: The evaluation of meteorological drought is crucial for water resource management. The Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) is widely used for drought assessment, but it may produce inaccurate results when dealing with zero precipitation data. This study proposes a modification to the SPI, called SPI-C, which introduces a correction factor to better handle zero precipitation data.

Characterization of simulated extreme El Nino events and projected impacts on South American climate extremes by a set of Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5 global climate models

Carla Gulizia et al.

Summary: This study characterized simulated extreme and moderate El Nino events and analyzed historical teleconnections on climate extremes in South America. It also addressed projected changes in these teleconnections under global warming context using 10 CMIP5 GCMs from three experiments. Results show that extreme El Nino events are projected to increase in occurrence, with similar spatial impacts to moderate events but potentially higher intensity in some regions and seasons.

Evaluation of extreme precipitation indices over West Africa in CMIP6 models

Aissatou Faye et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the performance of sixteen CMIP6 models in simulating extreme precipitation indices over West Africa, finding that the models reasonably reproduced the spatial patterns of the indices but exhibited differences between Sahel and Guinea coast subregions. Overall, the models overestimated consecutive wet days and heavy precipitation, with the ensemble mean performing better in capturing mean distributions of the extreme precipitation indices compared to individual models and gridded observations.

Summary: In order to reduce poverty in drought-prone Araucania, the Chilean Irrigation Commission is planning to expand irrigated areas, but climate change may exacerbate seasonal water scarcity. By constructing reservoirs and improving irrigation efficiency, the unmet water demand can be significantly reduced.

Hydroclimatic variability in Santiago (Chile) since the 16th century

Roberto Serrano-Notivoli et al.

Summary: The study of long-term hydroclimatic variability in Santiago, Chile revealed a significant shift in the mid-20th century, including increased interannual variability, reduced intensity of wet events, increased frequency of extreme dry events, and the identification of the most severe dry event coinciding with the "Megadrought" (2006-2016). The analysis also showed diverse impacts on hydroclimatic variability, with positive correlations between SPEI and PDO as well as Nino3.4, and negative correlations between SPEI and SOI, particularly at multi-annual time scales (>7 years), helping to understand current hydroclimatic changes in a broader context.

Monitoring meteorological drought in a semiarid region using two long-term satellite-estimated rainfall datasets: A case study of the Piranhas River basin, northeastern Brazil

Celia Soares de Brito et al.

Summary: Extreme weather events often have a serious impact on the quality of life and economy of the Brazilian semiarid region, where droughts are the main natural disaster. Satellite precipitation products, such as CHIRPS and PERSIANN-CDR, have been shown to be effective in monitoring meteorological drought in the region. These datasets are valuable complements to rain gauge-measured rainfall data and provide additional sources for hydrometeorological applications in the Piranhas River basin.

Water management or megadrought: what caused the Chilean Aculeo Lake drying?

Pilar Barria et al.

Summary: Aculeo Lake in Central Chile serves as an important natural reservoir, but has experienced a rapid shrinkage and eventually dried up due to severe and sustained drought as well as changes in land use. Research indicates that the main factor triggering the lake desiccation is the severe megadrought that led to significant reductions in river flows and aquifer recharges.

Intraseasonal teleconnections leading to heat waves in central Chile

Martin Jacques-Coper et al.

Summary: This study focuses on precursors of summer warm events in central Chile, indicating higher probabilities of occurrence with respect to expected climatological values. The relationship between the Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) and an extra-tropical index (ETI) in contributing to the organization of large-scale circulation anomalies leading ultimately to heat waves in CCh is explored. These signals can be monitored at least 2 weeks in advance, providing valuable insights for predicting and preparing for such extreme weather events.
